West High Gets Senior Night Sweep of Waterloo West
West High pushed its winning streak to six with sweep of Waterloo West in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday on senior night at West High.
Class 4A ninth-ranked West High won the opener 8-0 and took the nightcap 14-4 in five innings to improve to 26-9 on the season and 16-8 in MVC play.
Waterloo West dropped to 5-29 and 2-24 in conference contests.
Braden Houston struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter in a one-hit shutout in the opener.
Alex Granner went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the game one win while Jayson Barnes went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs.
Austin West had a hit, drove in a run and scored twice while Carter Johnson had a triple and drove in a run.
Trevor Byers tripled and Houston and Lucas Karwal each added hits for West High.
West High hammered 11 hits in the nightcap led by Nick Biancuzzo who went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs and Houston who was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Jason Strunk had a hit and scored twice while Ryan Cooper had a double and drove in three runs.
Alex Schwickerath had a double, an RBI and scored two runs in the nightcap.
Nate Wilkinson picked up the win in relief of starter Jack Wilson, allowing just four hits in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Solon Caps Conference Play With Sweep of Mount Vernon
Solon put the finishing touches on a strong run through its WAMAC conference schedule on Friday with a dominating sweep of rival Mount Vernon.
Class 3A fifth-ranked Solon (28-9) won the opener 14-0 in five innings behind a Luke Ira no-hitter and took the nightcap 3-1 to finish 23-5 in WAMAC play.
With the sweep Solon closed the season with eight consecutive conference wins and has now won nine of its last 10 games overall.
Mount Vernon dropped to 14-17 and 12-13 in WAMAC play with its sixth consecutive loss.
Ira struck out 12 in a five-inning no-hitter and also went 2-for-4 with his state-leading 16th home run to lead Solon in the opener.
Kendrick Harris, Tyler Linderbaum, Adam Bock and Payton Bandy all added two hits as Solon hammered 14 hits as a team.
Linderbaum, Bock, Bandy and Spencer Wegmann all drove in two runs for Solon while Ira, Harris and Wegmann scored twice and Linderbaum scored three runs.
Sophomore Lucas Walker tossed four shutout innings to pick up the win in the nightcap, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Linderbaum worked three hitless innings of relief allowing just one unearned run and striking out two.
Chris McSweeney and Cam Miller each went 1-for-2 with a double and McSweeney drove in a run and Miller scored a run for the Spartans.
Bock and Zach Wegmann each had a hit and drove in a run and Linderbaum scored a run in the win.

Benton Sweeps CCA in WAMAC West Division Doubleheader
Clear Creek Amana dropped both ends of a WAMAC conference double header to Benton Community on Friday in Van Horne.
Benton Community won the opener 2-1 in nine innings and took the nightcap 4-2 to improve to 16-19 on the season and 13-15 in WAMAC play.
Clear Creek Amana dropped to 16-18 on the year and 12-14 in conference action.
Camden Armstrong tossed a gem in the opener, allowing just two runs on eight hits and striking out eight in 8 2/3 innings.
Benton starter Spencer Touro matched Armstrong allowing one run on four hits while fanning seven in eight innings.
Parker Nolan worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win for Benton Community.
Sam Young, Armstrong, David Jensen and Camden Smyka had hits for the Clippers in the opener.
Jensen scored a run and Smyka had an RBI in the game one loss.
Cody Ogden took the loss in the nightcap allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits in four innings.
Grant Jensen pitched two innings of one-hit relief for the Clippers.
Young went 2-for-3 with a walk and David Jensen was 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Clippers in game two.
Tyler Schrepfer had a hit and scored a run and Ben Swails scored a run while Cody and Casey Ogden each drove in a run.
