Baseball Roundup: West High Splits Doubleheader With Cedar Falls

West High started the Mississippi Valley Conference season with a bang on Tuesday but not with a sweep.
Class 4A second-ranked West High scored the first 10 runs in a 12-7 win over Cedar Falls in the opener of a MVC doubleheader in Iowa City but couldn’t complete the sweep falling 7-6 in the nightcap.
West High moved to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in MVC play while Cedar Falls stopped a three-game losing skid with the win in the nightcap and is 3-4 on the year.
The Trojans used a seven-run fourth inning to break open game one.
Lucas Karwal had two hits including a triple and drove in two runs, while Braden Houston had two hits and drove in two runs.
Chase Calderwood had a pair of hits scored twice and drove in a run and Austin Curtiss homered and drove in three runs.
Jack Wilson picked up the win for West High allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Cedar Falls scored in each of the first five inning and held off a late West High rally to win the nightcap.
Houston homered twice and drove in three runs for West High while Trever Byers added a solo home run for the Trojans.
Logan Trumbull had two hits in game two and Ryan Cooper and Calderwood each drove in a run.
Tyler Stern took the loss allowing five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three in 3 1/3.

City High Splits with No. 5 CR Prairie
City High split a doubleheader with Class 4A fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in its Mississippi Valley Conference opener on Tuesday at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
The Little Hawks won the opener 8-7 as Dustin Dickerson scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
Cedar Rapids Prairie rebounded to win the nightcap 9-5 and improved to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in MVC play.
City High moved to 3-3 and 1-1 in conference action.
DJ Heck and Travis Reyhons each had two hits, including a double and scored two runs in the opener. Reyhons also drew a walk and drove in a pair of runs.
Jacob Dykes had two hits and an RBI and Zachary Kuepker had a hit and an RBI in game one.
Dykes worked 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the win after Quenton Max worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Brady Herzic.
Kuepker and Dykes each had two hits in game two and Dykes and Liam McComas each drove in two runs.
Heck walked twice, stole three bases and scored three runs in game two while Ben Parker and Cole Milder each had hits.
Ry Threlkeld-Wiegand took the loss for the Little Hawks allowing six runs on three hits while walking six in 2 1/3 innings.

Regina Rolls at Bellevue
Regina hammered out 16 hits on its way to a 19-0 win over Bellevue in a River Valley Conference cross-divisional matchup on Tuesday in Bellevue.
Class 2A second-ranked Regina improved to 3-1 with the win and is 1-0 in RVC play.
Mitchell Gahan picked up the win for Regina giving up one hits and striking out five in three innings and Masen Miller tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Blake Berns went 3-for-3 with a double a home run and three RBI and Trent Hoogerwerf had a double a home run and drove in four runs to pace Regina.
Ryan Schott had three hits and drove in two runs and Nick Brandt had two hits and drove in two runs.
Jayden Kies homered, dorove in two runs and scored twice for Regina.

Top-Ranked Davenport Assumption Too Much For Liberty High
Class 3A No. 1 Davenport Assumption broke open a two-run game with an eight-run sixth inning on its way to a 10-0 win over Liberty High on Tuesday in Davenport.
Davenport Assumption improved to 5-2 on the season while Liberty High dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Tyler Dahm, Isaac Bender and TJ Kill all had hits for the Lightning.
Ethan O’Donnell was the tough luck loser for Liberty High allowing just one run on one hit in four innings.
O’Donnell struck out one and walked two.

Clear Creek Amana Swept by No. 7 Marion
Class 3A seventh-ranked Marion scored two runs in the last inning twice on Tuesday to sweep Clear Creek Amana in a WAMAC West Division doubleheader in Tiffin.
Marion overcame a 5-4 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 6-5 win in the opener and plated a pair of runs with two out in the ninth to take the nightcap 2-0.
The doubleheader sweep snapped a four-game losing skid to open the season for Marion (2-4, 2-1 WAMAC) while Clear Creek Amana dropped to 3-5 and 0-4 in conference play.
Cody Ogden had three hits and scored a run to lead Clear Creek Amana in the opener while Camden Smyka was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Jordan Wolfe had a hit and drove in two runs while Ben Swails and Camden Armstrong both had a hit and an RBI in game one.
Clear Creek Amana loaded the bases with no out in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t push across a run.
Armstrong took the loss for the Clippers allowing six runs, three earned, on 11 hits in a complete game.
Ogden tossed a gem in the night cap, holding Marion to four hits and striking out seven over eight innings.
However, the Clippers could only muster three hits off Marion pitchers Austin Prier and Dane Carstensen who combined to fan nine in nine shutout innings.

Solon Sweeps 2A Top-Ranked Dyersville Beckman
Class 3A eighth-ranked Solon swept 2A top-ranked Dyersville Beckman in a top-10 WAMAC East Division matchup in Dyersville on Tuesday.
Solon won the opener 5-2 and completed the sweep with a 13-1 win in game two.
The Spartans improved to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in WAMAC play while Dyersville Beckman dropped to 1-5 on the season and 1-2 in WAMAC contests.
Luke Ira struck out 12 while earning the win in game one while Ryan Geistkemper fanned 10 in game two.
