TIFFIN – Darius Moore has a decision to make in the next couple of weeks.

Before the Clear Creek Amana senior could pick the college where he planned to continue his football career he first had to make sure he had the right sport.

With the way Moore has played on the hardwood this season that wasn’t an easy decision.

Moore ranks 13th in Class 3A in scoring at 19.4 points per game and leads the Clippers in assists and steals in his first season at Clear Creek Amana.

“Basketball has always been a part of me, my dad played at Iowa and it’s always been a part of my life,” Moore said. “Football just recently came into my life but I love it so we will see how it goes.”

In the end, Moore says football will likely win out and he’s plenty good on the gridiron catching 47 passes for 697 yards and four touchdowns in eight games last fall at CCA.  

Moore is ‘90 percent sure’ he’ll play football at the next level and lists Iowa Western Community College and Northern Iowa as his two top options.

The 6-foot-2 Moore can’t go wrong either way. As he has shown this season Moore could have a basketball future as well.

“He brings an energy and an intensity that maybe we didn’t have before,” Clear Creek Amana coach Brandon Clubb said. “He provides that leadership on the floor.”

Moore averaged 6.3 points per game two seasons ago as a sophomore at Sioux City West. That dropped to 3.9 points per game last season.

This year, Moore has flourished in his role as the facilitator in the Clipper backcourt.

“He has that ability to create, create stuff for himself and his teammates and we haven’t had that,” Clubb said. “He can get baskets he can set his teammates up for baskets and he get to the line when he wants to. That’s a dynamic that we haven’t had offensively.”

Moore scored 15 points in his CCA debut and followed with 11 points in a loss to Mount Vernon.

Since those two games Moore has scored 20 points or more five times and been over 30 twice including a career-high 34 in a win over Williamsburg.

“My confidence has skyrocketed and when my confidence is high that’s when I feel like I can do whatever and the hoop is 10 feet wide and every shot is going in,” Moore said. “I still have to work on my outside jump shot but I think everything is falling into place.”

Moore has done more than just score.

He ranks second on the team with five rebounds a game and leads the team with 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

He is coming off one of his best games of the season when he scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting in a 73-69 win over Benton Community on Tuesday.

“I give credit to my teammates,” Moore said. “They do a great job of helping me have success so I give all the credit to them. My teammates support everything 100 percent, when I get them the ball they knock down shots which is key.”
