Girls Track Roundup: West High Wins Second Straight MVC Divisional Title

The 16th conference title in the past 20 years for West High came in dominating fashion on Thursday.
West High won 10 events, placing first and second in half of those events and cruised to the team title with 180 points at the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Divisional meet at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo.
Bailey Nock won the 800, 1,500 and 3,00 and Valerie Welch added titles in the long jump and 100 hurdles as West High won its second consecutive divisional title.
West High got titles from Chandler Haight in the shot put, Leah Dusterhoft in the discus and won three relays while rolling up 180 points to finish 70 points in front of runner-up Linn-Mar.
The Women of Troy won titles in the shuttle hurdle, distance medley and 4×800 relays, placed in 18 of 19 events and had two placewinners in every individual event but one.
Gabby Skopec was second to Nock in both the 1,500 and 3,000 and Deniz Ince was runner-up to Nock in the 800.
Haight was second in the discus, Kitra Bell was second in the long jump and Welch finished second in the 400 hurdles.

City High’s Murphy Just Misses Throwing Event Sweep
Luci Murphy came up four inches short of a throwing event sweep for City High at the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division meet at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Murphy won the discus with a mark of 125-3 and finished second in the shot put with a toss of 39-2 ½, just four inches behind champion Megan Gronau of Dubuque Hempstead.
The strong performance by Murphy helped City High to a sixth-place team finish with 68 points.
Cedar Falls won the team title with 126 points while Dubuque Senior was second with 99 and Cedar Rapids Prairie was third with 86.
Mary Arch finished second in the 800 for City High in 2:28.03 and helped the City High 4×800 team to a third-place finish in 10:04.67.
Anna Lindower finished third in the 1,500 in 5:02.76.

Miller Leads West Branch at RVC Meet
Paige Miller won the 400 hurdles and ran on three West Branch relay teams that earned top three finishes to help the Bears to a sixth-place team finish at the River Valley Conference meet on Thursday in Bellevue.
Miller won the 400 hurdles in 1:06.27 and anchored the West Branch shuttle hurdle and 4×200 relay teams to runner-up finishes.
The senior also ran the anchor on the West Branch 4×400 squad that finished third helping the Bears rack up 50.5 points.
Defending 2A state champion Cascade won the team title with 157 points while North Cedar was second with 115.5 and Monticello finished third with 90.
Regina finished 11th with 24 points.
Grace Swenning placed fifth in both the 200 and 400 and ran a leg on the sprint medley relay team that placed third to lead Regina.

Solon Second at WAMAC Meet
Solon finished runner-up at the WAMAC meet for the second straight season on Thursday as Mount Vernon edged the Spartans for the team title in Epworth.
Mount Vernon finished with 109 points while Solon was second with 95 followed by Benton Community with 78.
Clear Creek Amana finished 12th with 28.5 points.
Erin Kerkhoff won the 400 and added a runner-up finish in the 200 and a fourth-place finish in the 100 to lead Solon.
Josie Durr won the high jump and the sprint medley relay team of Sayler McIlravy, Alexis Sands, Bryn Hanrahan and Taylor Ryan won in a time of 1:52.14.
Gabbi Bullard added a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles and teammate Sophie Nicol was fourth.
Mariah Roller led Clear Creek Amana with a runner-up finish in the discus with a toss of 108-6 while Karsyn Stratton was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16-1.
