IOWA CITY – Prior to the final round at the Clyde Bean Duals on Saturday the City High wrestling team recognized the family of the legendary coach for which the tournament is named.

When the wrestling resumed, the Little Hawks found the most fitting way possible to honor its late former coach, with a win.

City High capped a perfect 5-0 performance with a 52-21 win over Decorah to win its own dual tournament for the second straight season.

In the first Clyde Bean duals since its namesake passed away, City High turned in a performance its long-time coach would have approved of.

City High won 52 matches in its five dual wins on Saturday and didn’t have a dual decided by less than 31 points.

“He started this program and he’s meant so much to City High I really wanted to win it,” City High coach Cory Connell said of Bean. “I want to win it every year, but I really wanted to win it this year for him and his family.”

Bean won 276 duals, nine conference titles and had 17 individual state champs while leading the City High wrestling program from 1957-1991.

The City High Hall of Fame member passed away in May.

With members of the Bean family in attendance on hand for Saturday’s finale against Decorah the Little Hawks put together their fifth consecutive dominating effort.

City High had seven pins among its nine wins against Decorah and racked up 31 falls in five dual wins on the day.

“It’s really special especially with Clyde Bean passing away it was even more special than usual,” City High senior Brock Hunger said. “We won it last year so we came in with a lot of confidence.”

Decorah rolled to wins in its first four duals of the day setting up a de facto title match in the final round.

The Vikings took an early lead when Isaiah Mitchell scored a takedown and three-point nearfall in sudden victory overtime to edge Wilfred Kadohou 10-5 at 160 pounds.

City High responded with four consecutive six-point wins to take a 24-3 lead.

Pins by Kyle Hefley at 170, Hunger at 182 and fourth-ranked Jacoby Dykes at 195 and a forfeit for Jordain Buckland at 220 gave the Little Hawks a lead they would never give up.

Hefley, Hunger, Dykes and Buckland all went 5-0 for City High on the day.

“It’s really important to stay focused because our toughest matches were at the end, especially Decorah,” Hunger said. “We came into that not 100 percent but we wrestled close to 100 percent so that was good.”

Decorah won three straight matches at 106, 113 and 120 to stay alive but back-to-back pins by Lance Bormann at 126 and Joey Harney at 132 secured the win.

Bormann’s second period pin of Corban Rowley stopped the Decorah momentum and helped City High win four of the final five matches.

Borman also finished 5-0 on the day.

“We got out to a good lead and we lost a couple of close ones so I wanted to go out there and get it going in the right way,” Bormann said. “I was able to do that and we closed it out.”

City High added wins over Cedar Rapids Xavier 61-16, Keokuk 60-12, Muscatine 71-6 and Oskaloosa 54-22 before defeating Decorah in the finale.

“I thought we were pretty good, there were a couple of matches where we could have done better,” Connell said. “There were some close matches that we need to pull out, when it comes down to the nitty gritty we need to pull out those close matches and find a way to win. We are close but now we have to find a way to win every single one of those. For the most part it was a good day.
