CEDAR RAPIDS – A year a Carson Meskimen finished second at the WAMAC Conference meet.
Meskimen was 10.3 seconds behind individual champ Dawson Scheil of Mount Vernon-Lisbon in his runner-up finish last fall.
From start to finish and even in pre-meet preparation Meskimen made sure he left nothing to chance on Wednesday in his return to the conference meet.
Meskimen pulled away from the field early and cruised to the individual title in a time of 15:33.4 at the WAMAC Conference meet on an overcast afternoon at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids.
“That was my key motivation,” Meskimen said. “I was right behind Dawson Scheil last year and he is such an excellent runner and it was such an honor to be up with those guys but that’s what built the confidence and motivation for me to be able to think I can do it, I can go out and get a conference championship.”
Meskimen became the first individual WAMAC champion in Clear Creek Amana history, finishing nearly 20 seconds in front of runner-up Marion who finished in 15:52.8 as four runners cracked the 16-minute mark on Wednesday.
The title for Meskimen was the third consecutive top-10 conference finish for the junior who was eighth as a freshman before his runner-up performance last season.
“I was talking to coach and he was saying ‘whatever you have to do to go win it go do that’,” Meskimen said. “He didn’t care if it was hanging back with the guys our taking it out myself and I just said, ‘I’m just going to go win it’.”
Meskimen did his prep for Wednesday’s race on Saturday, coming to Seminole Valley Park to get a look at the course.
That early prep work paid dividends for Class 3A’s second-ranked runner on race day.
“I came up this weekend to check the course out, it had been a while since we’d been up here so it was good to get a feel for it again and I knew I could do it,” Meskimen said. “I came up with my dad and I kind of knew the layout, I knew where it was wet and I knew the right path and I was very confident coming into it.”
The individual title from Meskimen helped Clear Creek Amana to a runner-up team finish, the fourth consecutive top-three WAMAC Conference meet finish for the Clippers.
Four Clippers finished in the top 15, including three in the top 10 as senior Mason Miller was fifth in 16:00.3 and junior Kyle Vogel was 10th in 16:31.6.
Junior Quade Jensen finished 12th in 16:37.3 and freshman Ashur Whitmer was 19th in 17:02.9 for the Clippers.
Class 3A fourth-ranked Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the team title with 44 points and sixth-ranked Clear Creek Amana was three points back.
Class 3A No. 14 Benton was third with 63 followed by No. 20 Marion with 111 and Grinnell with 148.
Solon was seventh with 185.
“Our whole goal was trying to stay with as many Mount Vernon kids as possible, that’s always a good goal to have, they’ve been a bit better than us collectively going into this so that was our goal and our coaches are very happy with where we are at right now and confident going into the state qualifier next week.”
Solon was led by junior Anders Holmes who finished 11th in a time of 16:34.5 and junior Deacon Waddell was 31st in 17:26.6.
