City High senior Henry Birt and Liberty High senior Brooks Andersen each shot an eight-over-par 79 on Monday at the opening day of the two-day Class 4A state golf tournament at the Davenport Country Club in Davenport.

Birt and Andersen are both tied for 37^th place after the opening 18 holes and are eight strokes off the lead.

Dubuque Wahlert senior Cal Martineau shot a one-under-par 70 on Monday and holds a one stroke lead over Henry Sobaski of Cedar Rapids Prairie and Avery Van Zelderen of Dallas Center-Grimes who each shot even par on Monday.

Andersen shot a four-over 40 on the front nine and was four over par on the back nine on Monday on his way to an opening-round 79.

Birt shot eight over on the front nine and shot an even-par 35 on the back nine.
