Top-ranked Solon struck early and cruised to a dominating 48-14 win in their season opener over  Davenport Assumption at Jack and Pat Bush Stadium in Davenport.

On the game’s third play from scrimmage, Spartan quarterback Maddox Kelley ran untouched through the Assumption defense for a 65-yard touchdown to give the Spartans the early lead. After the Spartan defense held the Knights to a quick 3-and-out, Cody Milliman’s punt block setup another Kelley 35-yard touchdown run, again untouched around the left side.

Barely two minutes into the game, the Spartans led 14-0.

Assumption answered with an 11-play, 80-yard drive to cut the lead to 14-7 with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter.

But it was all Solon after that, with the Spartans scoring 34 unanswered points.

The Spartan defense came up big all night with turnovers.

A James Thomsen punt block led to the first of two Kelley-to-Kaden Hoeper touchdown strikes. Hoeper added an interception, which led to another Kelley touchdown run.

Jackson Burk also capped off a Spartan scoring drive with a 30-yard run.

Assumption had no answer for Kelley.

Kelley, who moved to quarterback for his senior season, totaled 355 yards of total offense with six touchdowns (4 rushing, 2 passing).

Hoeper netted 113 yards of offense and scored two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Spartans were led by seniors Lucas Feuerbach and James Thomsen who each recorded double-digit tackles for the game.
