TIFFIN – As a veteran varsity pitcher Clear Creek Amana senior Elizabeth Timmerman has extensive experience in dissecting an opposing lineup.
That knowledge from years in the circle gives Timmerman a pretty good idea what goes through the mind of opposing pitchers faced with the task of taking on her own Clipper lineup.
“As a pitcher if I would look at our team I would see our batting average, our walks, our steals, the home runs,” Timmerman said. “That would be really intimidating.”
The Clippers demonstrated just how diverse and explosive their offense could be on Friday with a pair of wins at its home tournament.
Class 4A seventh-ranked Clear Creek Amana (23-7) hammered 24 hits and scored 17 runs in wins over Class 2A No. 12 Regina and Fairfield on Friday in the first day of a two-day tournament in Tiffin.
The wins were the fourth straight for the Clippers following a 6-4 loss to Marion in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday.
Clear Creek Amana has outscored opponents 48-0 in its current four-game winning streak.
“After the game against Marion that we lost I told them we are a better hitting team than that and we had to adjust to the pitching,” Clear Creek Amana coach Reid Kaalberg said. “I am very proud of them that they did that today.”
All nine Clipper starters had a hit in a 7-0 win over Regina (14-9) to open the day.
Senior Kyla Schulte led the way going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI.
Eighth-grader Kynlee McElvain earned the win allowing two runs in six shutout innings walking three and striking out nine.
Lizzie Pasbrig doubled and drove in two runs and Timmerman had a hit and scored twice.
It was more of the same in a 10-0 win over Fairfield (12-12) as the Clippers clubbed 14 hits from eight different players.
“The nice part about this lineup is they are pretty unique and they can do it all,” Kaalberg said. “They can drop a bunt for a hit, they can sacrifice and move a runner over and then know the next girl is going to hit a ball to the outfield.”
Clear Creek Amana jumped to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind back-to-back home runs from Schulte and Pasbrig that made the score 3-0.
“Today was really good, we hit the ball well,” Schulte said. “We were stringing hits together and we’ve been struggling with that a little lately so it was good to see us be able to do that.”
Timmerman, Schulte, Pasbrig, Brenna Williams Charlotte Trevino and Hayden Frost all had two hits for the Clippers.
Trevino drove in four runs while Williams and Schulte each had two RBI.
“We are a really tough team to pitch to,” Timmerman said. “The top of our order really smokes balls and are so strong and the bottom of our order has so many fast people, and players that can bunt it makes it really tough.”
Timmerman earned the win against Fairfield allowing just three hits in three scoreless innings striking out two without walking a batter.
“She threw phenomenal in this game,” Kaalberg said. “She is going from being an ace last year and this year she is coming in and filling in and I am very proud of her for how she’s handled that role. She has just handled her busy every time she’s gone in.”
