IOWA CITY – Maeve Bowen-Burt stared in her individual event on Thursday at the Class 4A state qualifying meet at City High.

A Drake Relays champion in the 400 meter hurdles last month and the state leader in the event Bowen-Burt won the 400 hurdles on Thursday to secure a spot at the 4A state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines next week.

It was what the Little Hawks did as a team that meant the most to Bowen-Burt.

City High had 10 automatic state qualifiers and finished third in the team standings in a strong state qualifying meet showing at Raffensperger Track in Iowa City.

“Our team was incredible tonight, we just all love each other so much,” Bowen-Burt said. “There is no animosity between anyone, we all care about each other and we honestly just love the sport and love to be around each other.”

Bowen-Burt was the lone individual champion for City High on Thursday winning the 400 hurdles in 1:02.81.

The winning time was just off her state-leading time of 1:02.01.

“I feel great, I didn’t pr tonight and that’s ok but I feel good,” Bowen-Burt said. “I feel really confident and I am excited to compete against some really great athletes next week.”

City High had four individual runner-up finishes and had five relays finish runner-up on its way to racking up 141 points and 10 auto qualifiers.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won the team title with 168 points, 11 more than runner-up Johnston.

“It went pretty well,” City High coach Joe Graf said. “We knew it was going to be tough to catch Johnston and Prairie but we knew we had a chance to qualify many, many events and I believe of the 19 we’ll have 15 or 16 going.”

Senior throwing standout Rachel Haack was runner-up in both the shot and discus to Ottumwa senior Delilah Subsin who leads the state in the shot put and is second in the discus this spring.

Haack was runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 43-10 and broke her own school record in the discus with a toss of 150-9.

Senior Hannah Braun was third in both evens with a mark of 39-1 ½ in the shot put and 144-7 in the discus.

“Rachel threw 150 tonight which breaks the school record again and they are best friend with Delilah (Subsin) they love her so it’s great competition,” Graf said. “Hannah Braun too, they just feed off each other and those two seniors are really leading us.”

Alice Edelen cleared 5-1 to finish runner-up in the high jump and Abigail Burns was runner-up in the 3,000 in 10:31.03.

City High did its best work in the relays.

The Little Hawks were second in the 4×200, 4×800, shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and distance medley.

Bowen-Burt anchored the sprint medley team to a runner-up finish in 1:48.01.

“I like the individual events so I can showcase what I can do on my own but I love the relays,” Bowen-Burt said. “I love to be able to work with my team.”

The City High 4×200 team of Willow Schultz, Jaydah Kent, Janiah Newell and Ellie Fraga was runner-up in 1:44.19 and the 4×800 team of Calissa Fruin, Eliza Doster, Naomi Downing-Sherer and Lucy Sherburne was second in 9:51.72.

The foursome of Gloria Konu, Bernadette Hamilton, Madeline Fraga and Willow Schultz was second in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:07.17 and the distance medley relay team of Dede Aboussa-Folly, Janrita Dahn, Noelle Schnoebelen and Burns was runner-up in 4:17.7.

“They performed well across the board,” Graf said. “They surprise us every night, they just keep getting better and I love it.”

West High had one automatic qualifier as sophomore Amara MacLagan was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 17-5.
