IOWA CITY – It took an entire team effort to have City High in position to win the team title at the Forwald/Coleman Relays with one event remaining.
It was Maeve Bowen-Burt and the Little Hawk 4×400 relay team that sealed the win.
Bowen-Burt anchored City High to a win the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:57.93 as City High held off Waukee to win the team title at the 53rd Forwald/Coleman Relays on Thursday at Raffensperger Track in Iowa City.
“We haven’t won this in a long time so I am so happy to be a part of it,” Bowen-Burt said. “It feels amazing.”
City High was runner-up at its home meet last season.
On Thursday the Little Hawks got over the hump, winning its first Forwald/Coleman team title since 2022 with 150 points, three more than runner-up Waukee.
West Des Moines Valley was third with 107 followed by Pleasant Valley with 103 and Linn-Mar with 93.
“It means a lot because it really just puts together how hard our entire team is working,” City High junior Ellie Fraga said. “It feels really good because it was such a team win.”
Fraga, Bowen-Burt, Abigial Burns and senior throwing standout Rachel Haack all took turns in the spotlight for City High on Thursday but it truly was a team effort.
City High scored points in 18 of 19 events on Thursday, including all seven relays, and had 14 top-three finishes.
Burns, Fraga and Haack accounted for four individual titles as 13 different Little Hawks combined to post top-eight finishes in individual events.
“One person cannot win a meet and this was a combination group effort,” Fraga said. “All of our field events did amazing, our sprints did amazing, our distance was amazing and if all of that didn’t come together and work together as whole team we couldn’t have done it.”
Haack dominated her way to a sweep of the throwing events.
The senior won the discus with a throw of 144-9 while teammate Hannah Braun was runner-up with a mark of 132-11.
Haack added a title in the shot put with a career-best mark of 45-9 ¼ which was nearly seven feet further than runner-up Annie Cassidy of Linn-Mar.
“You can kind of feel it when it comes out, just the way my rotation was going and I knew it was good,” Haack said. “I was kind of celebrating in my head a little bit before it hit the ground because I knew it was good.”
Braun finished third in the shot put with a mark of 38-6 ¾.
“This is my favorite meet of the year because we have such a strong throwing program at City High and every time a City High thrower steps in the ring there is cheering,” Haack said. “It’s inspiring.”
Junior Alice Edelen cleared 5-1 to win the high jump to cap a strong field event day for City High.
On the track the Little Hawks were just as good and equally balanced.
Fraga won the 200 in 25.79 and was third in the 100.
“I feel pretty good,” Fraga said. “My 100 was a good race, it wasn’t as good as I wanted but I am really happy with my 200 and I felt really strong out of the blocks so I am really happy with that.”
Burns won the 3,000 in 10:33.40 and was runner-up in the 1,500 in 4:44.69.
Bowen-Burt was runner-up in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.52 and anchored the Little Hawk sprint medley team to a win in 1:47.83.
She capped the night by securing the win with an anchor leg of the 4×400.
“We had to beat Waukee in that race to win. I just had to stay with her the whole race. I wasn’t trying to pr or anything, I wasn’t focused on a crazy time I was just trying to get ahead of her,” Bowen-Burt said. “It feels amazing. We were trying to get under 4 for over a year so it feels really good.”
Cedar Rapids Prairie won the boys title with 150.5 points while West High was runner-up with 114 points.
City High was sixth with 74.5 points followed by Clear Creek Amana with 72 and Liberty High with 29.
West High swept the throwing events with James Barnett winning the shot put with a mark of 57-6 ¾ and Collin Whitters winning the discus with a toss of 166-2.
Whitters was third in the shot put and Elite Mbulekoya was third in the discus.
The Trojans added a title in the distance medley relay while Waleed Ibrahim was runner-up in the 110 hurdles and Ely Smock was runner-up in the 400 hurdles.
Cael Dunham added a third-place finish in the 400 for the Trojans.
Clear Creek Amana got runner-up finishes from Carson Bromwell in the shot put, Riley Colvin in the 200 and Carson Meskimen in the 1,600 while Tay Seals was third in the 100 and Jackson VanHorn was third in the 800.
Raphael Etuma was runner-up in the discus to lead City High while Gavin Washpun was third in the 110 hurdles, Damari Lacy was third in the long jump and Adams Kane was third in the 400 hurdles and the high jump.
