DES MOINES – It was a painful Saturday night for Solon at the state wrestling meet.
Sophomore Anderson Osgood and junior Lucas Feuerbach each lost tight contests in Class 2A state title matches on Saturday evening at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines.
Solon head coach Aaron Hadefeldt wasn’t going to shy away from the obvious emotion his wrestlers were feeling on Saturday.
“It hurts,” Hadenfeldt said. “You let it hurt and it’s going to hurt but it doesn’t hurt long enough that it hinders us but you let it hurt and you learn from it.”
Second-ranked Osgood (45-4) dropped a 4-0 decision to top-ranked Jackson Parmater of Vinton-Shellsburg in the 106-pound title match.
Feuerbach (46-3) fell to top-ranked Eaghan Fleshman of Alburnett 4-1 in sudden victory in the 285-pound title match.
Saturday may have hurt but with a pair of state runners-up returning next season the future is extremely bright for a Solon squad that finished 14th in the 2A team standings with 54.5 points.
“We’ve got some pretty good bookends to build around,” Hadenfeldt said. “We are going to be looking to those guys as leaders going into the offseason.
Parmater (38-2) scored a takedown in the opening period and an escape in the second while avenging a 3-1 loss to Osgood in the finals of the WAMAC Conference meet on January 31.
Feuerbach and Fleshman went to sudden victory tied 1-1 for the second time this month with Fleshman recording the winning takedown less than 20 seconds into the final period.
“I think you let it hurt but you learn from it,” Hadenfeldt said. “Most of the time you learn more from a loss than you do from a win.”
Feuerbach and Osgood will be the cornerstones of what should be an even better Solons team next season.
“We want to learn from this and we want to improve and not just those two guys but as a team,” Hadenfeldt said. “And those are going to be two guys that we lean on.”
West Branch had a pair of wrestlers earn medals on Saturday.
Junior 113-pounder Ethan Humphrey bounced back from a semifinal loss with a pair of consolation wins on Saturday morning to earn a third-place finish.
Humphrey (45-3) won a 10-3 decision over top-ranked Kohen Dietzenbach of Burlington Notre Dame and added a 7-1 decision over ninth-ranked Riker DeWitt of Williamsburg in the third-place match.
West Branch senior Cash Hatfield (36-8) finished eighth at 144 pounds.
