Simon Shetler has been thinking about wrestling at the state tournament for a long time.
After watching his brothers qualify for the state meet Simon Shetler finally got his state qualifying moment on Saturday.
Shetler won three consecutive matches to claim the 285-pound title at the Class 1A, District 5 meet on Saturday at Lisbon.
“I wanted the feeling of being a state qualifier,” Shetler said. “I’ve been thinking about it since I was a little kid so it’s something really special to be a state qualifier.”
The title by Porter Shetler highlighted a strong day for Regina as the Regals qualified three wrestlers for next week’s state meet at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines while finishing runner-up in the District 5 team standings.
Lisbon won the team title with 208 points followed by Regina with 160 and Belle Plaine with 131.
Porter Shetler and Dawson Boileau each posted runner-up finishes on Saturday to join Simon Shetler as state qualifiers.
Simon Shetler edged Landon Retherford of Durant 4-2 in tie breaker one in the 285-pound semifinals.
“Going into it I was pretty hungry for that win,” Shetler said. “In the back of my mind I knew I was going to need that one if I was going to win it all and I was just happy to get the job done.”
Shetler (40-13) won the 285-pound title with a second-period pin of Tate Nelson of Lone Tree in the championship match.
“It’s really special,” Shetler said. “The whole team has been working hard and I’m happy that I’m able to be a district champ for Regina.”
Porter Shetler (37-16) finished runner-up at 215 pounds falling to fifth-ranked Kamdyn Kraklio of Durant in the championship match.
Boileau (45-12) finished runner-up at 190 pounds falling to Luke Lansing of Springville 7-5 in the title match.
