SOLON – Weather caused the cancellation of the 2024 edition of the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational costing Lucas Feuerbach an opportunity at a title at his home meet as a freshman.
Nothing has stopped Feuerbach from claiming championships at his home meet the past two seasons.
Class 2A second-ranked Feuerbach pinned his way to an individual title at the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational for the second consecutive season on Saturday winning the 285-pound crown to help Solon to a runner-up team finish at its home invite.
“It means a lot to win at home in front of all my friends and family but more than that it’s great to win for our team and the program,” Feuerbach said. “To win the way I did I just feel really good about myself.”
Feuerbach (32-1) was his usual dominant self on his way to the 285-pound title on Saturday.
Last year’s 215-pound champ at the event, Feuerbach posted three consecutive first-period pins en route to the individual title.
Feuerbach pinned Bryce Stewart of North Scott in 1:30 in the championship match.
“He lost at the beginning of the season and since then we’ve really tried to focus on good shots,” Solon coach Aaron Hadenfeldt said. “He’s powerful enough he can take sloppy shots and they are going to work against 95 percent of kids but the five percent that they don’t work against are the five that matter the most and he’s been taking good shots.”
The only loss of the season for Feuerbach came to 2A top-ranked Eaghan Fleshman of Alburnett at the season-opening Cliff Keen Invitational.
Since that loss Feuerbach has won 27 consecutive matches all but one coming by forfeit for fall.
“I lost the first tournament of the season but other than that I feel really good about myself,” Feuerbach said. “I’ve been pushing myself every practice, training harder and I have a lot of great partners to push myself.”
The title by Feuerbach highlighted a strong day for Solon at its home meet as the Spartans finished runner-up to team champion North Scott with 174 points.
Senior Carson Kidwell and sophomore Anderson Osgood added runner-up finishes for Solon as the Spartans had eight wrestlers post top-four finishes.
“I seem to focus on the negative more than positives but this is a tough tournament and we came out and competed for the most part,” Hadenfeldt said. “There is always work to do.”
2A second-ranked Osgood (31-3) defeated 3A eighth-ranked Connor McGonegle of Liberty High 7-0 in the 106-pound semifinals before dropping an 9-1 major decision to 2A top-ranked Jackson Parmater of Vinton-Shellsburg in the title match.
“You could argue that 106 bracket was one of the two toughest brackets here today,” Hadenfeldt said. “The last time we wrestled that kid a week and half ago he tech falled us so we closed the gap obviously and we will continue to work and we will see that kid again.”
Kidwell (30-7) finished runner-up at 157 pounds falling to Benjamin Lightle of North Scott 10-0 in the title match.
“Carson does what Carson continues to do,” Hadenfeldt said. “He is a reliable senior, you know you are going to get his best effort but there is still work to do there.”
Jadyn Bevans and Connor Dunn each finished third for Solon at 144 pounds and 175 pounds respectively.
Jayden Steapp was fourth at 126, Eli Cash was fourth at 150 and Kyler Jesen was fourth at 215 for Solon.
West Branch got individual titles from Ethan Humprey at 113 and Cash Hatfield at 144 and had five wrestlers finish in the top three while pacing fourth as a team with 148.5 points.
2A third-ranked Humphrey (27-2) won the 113-pound title with an 8-1 win over 1A sixth-ranked Jack Gogel of Lisbon.
2A fifth-ranked Hatfield rallied for a 9-5 win over 2A No. 12 Gable Underbakke of West Liberty in the 144-pound title match.
“That’s usually my goal to get the first takedown and obviously that didn’t happen but I just had to stay mentally focused,” Hatfield said. “I couldn’t let the gym, the crowd, the other coaches or him get to me. I had to be laser focused on what I wanted to do.”
Maddux Rushton (23-12) finished runner-up at 138 pounds falling to 3A fourth-ranked Will McDermott of North Scott in the championship.
Teague Thomas finished third for West Branch 120 pounds and Cooper Gates was third for the Bears at 165 pounds.
Clear Creek Amana finished sixth with 147 points and Liberty High was 10th with 86.5 points.
Tytus Steapp was runner-up at 120 pounds for Clear Creek Amana falling to Noah Garcia of West Liberty in the title match.
Cole Kasparek finished third at 106 pounds, Aidan Schrock was third at 190 pounds and Dylan Schrock was third at 215 pounds for Clear Creek Amana.
Liberty High got an individual title from Rex Edmonds (23-6) at 132 pounds and McGonegle (12-3) finished fourth at 106 pounds for the Lightning.
