NORTH LIBERTY – It was a night to celebrate the seniors on the Liberty High wrestling team on Thursday.
It was a couple of those honored seniors that helped the Lightning close out a dual win.
Seniors Finn O’Toole and Landon Bell had late wins as Liberty High won the final three matches to close out a 46-26 win over Dubuque Senior in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual in North Liberty.
“It felt great to see those guys go out there and do that,” Liberty High coach Fred Lima said. “They put in the time in and it’s nice to see them let their light shine in front of everybody.”
While it was the seniors that closed it out it was another senior that got Liberty High rolling on Thursday.
Senior Jaryn Sertterh won a 4-0 decision over Jack Stone at 285 pounds after back-to-back Dubuque Senior wins to open the match.
The win by Sertterh started a string of six consecutive victories for Liberty High.
Juniors Konstantinos Panos and Benjamin Rosen and sophomores Everett Kahn and Rex Edmonds had wins during the stretch that gave Liberty High a 30-11 lead.
Dubuque Senior whittled that lead to 30-26 with three consecutive wins but O’Toole, Bell and junior Charles Nicknish put things away.
“As the score got closer I was going through all the different sequences of what could happen, figuring out what I needed to do to put the team in a good position,” O’Toole said. “When I got out there it all just faded away and I just focused on winning that match.”
O’Toole gave Liberty High some breathing room with a huge win at 157 pounds.
With Liberty High leading by just four O’Toole took an early lead on his way to a third-period pin of Oliver Parker.
“I stayed strong in my stance and I was able to get some points off his shot and just continuing that through the second and third period,” O’Toole said. “It got a little scary at the end, a little bit of a scramble but I knew I had a little more in the gas tank to get that final push.”
Nicknish followed with a second-period pin of Ayden Torres in 3:05 at 165 to lock up the win for Liberty High.
“It was just awesome seeing Finn go out there and win took the pressure off,” Bell said. “Charles had a great match and it was super cool to watch.”
The dual win was secured but Bell still put the finishing touches on the win with a 13-1 major decision over Cam Dukes at 190 pounds.
“It was pretty sweet, there were a lot of people here,” Bell said. “It was fun to compete here one last time.”
