Player to watch: Bettendorf sophomore quarterback Cannon Davis (6-1, 185) completed 16-of-23 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 44 yards in a 24-17 loss to Pleasant Valley last Saturday.
Key stat: City High is 2-1 against Bettendorf over the previous two seasons and averaged 35 points per game in the previous three meetings with the Bulldogs.
About the Bulldogs: Bettendorf has lost three consecutive games after opening last season with eight straight wins.
The Bulldogs lost to City High 42-23 in the regular season finale last fall before falling to West High 21-16 in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.
Bettendorf fell to Pleasant Valley 24-17 in the season opener on Saturday morning at Pleasant Valley.
Sophomore Cannon Davis takes over at quarterback while senior Jack Wessel (6-0, 200) rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown in the opening against Pleasant Valley.
Hayden Morrison (6-1, 185) had seven receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown in week one while junior Caleb Brown (6-2, 180) had four catches for 60 yards.
Junior linebacker Gavin Stecker (6-3, 205) had 10.5 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss in the season opener and ranked second on the team with 58 tackles last season as a sophomore including 7.5 tackles for loss.
Senior defensive lineman Armon Williams (6-0, 220) had eight tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack against Pleasant Valley after posting 12.5 tackles for loss and four sacks last season.
About the Little Hawks: City High has posted three consecutive 6-4 seasons and opened the year with a 30-0 loss to cross-town rival West High on Friday.
Sophomore quarterbacks Chris Kabaiza (5-10, 175) and Coden Kurtz (5-11, 170) split quarterback duties in the opener and combined to complete 10-of-20 passes for 84 yards and an interception.
Sophomore Marshall Sheldon (6-0, 173) rushed for a team-high 90 yards in the opener and also had 7.5 tackles with three tackles for loss.
Junior Chayse Newton (5-8, 146) had three receptions for 32 yards and senior Jack Lampe (6-0, 160) had three receptions for 28 yards in the opener.
Senior defensive lineman Raphael Etuma (6-2, 220) had seven tackles with four tackles for loss and senior Kale Muhlenbruch (5-10, 160) had a team-high 8.5 tackles in the opener.
Dubuque Hempstead (0-1) at West High (1-0)
Where: Trojan Stadium, 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Dubuque Hempstead senior Jaden Montgomery (5-9, 190) rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and caught two passes for 61 yards and a touchdown and also had a team-high 8.5 tackles in a week-one loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Key stat: West High hasn’t started a season 2-0 since 2020 when it opened the season with back-to-back wins over Liberty High and City High.
About the Mustangs: Dubuque Hempstead is coming off back-to-back winning seasons, going 5-4 in 2023 and posting a 6-3 record last season.
The Mustangs were outscored 21-6 in the second half of a season-opening 42-20 home loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy last week.
Hempstead returns its starting quarterback in senior Avery Keehner (6-0, 180) its top rusher and tackler in Jaden Montgomery and its top receiver in Landon McKay (6-0, 180) from last season.
Keehner completed 10-of-22 passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and also rushed for 34 yards in the week-one loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Seven different players caught a pass in the season opener led by McKay with four receptions for 23 yards.
Senior Nolan Deutsch (5-10, 170) had six tackles and McCoi Knox (6-0, 160) had five tackles for the Mustangs last week.
About the Trojans: West High opened the season with an emphatic 30-0 win over cross-town rival City High that snapped a four-game losing skid for the Trojans in the series.
Juniors Mikey Moody (6-0, 200) and Reece Wheeler (5-11, 170) split time at quarterback in the week-one win over City High.
Moody rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown while Wheeler completed 7-of-15 passes for 118 yards and also rushed for 33 yards.
Senior tailback Campbell Janis (5-9, 175) rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown as West High rolled up 243 rushing yards in the week-one win.
Senior Ethan Headings (6-2, 205) had four receptions for 89 yards and Henry Elser (6-1, 175) had two catches for 31 yards.
West High was impressive defensively in the win over City High limiting the Little Hawks to 207 total yards.
Senior linebacker Julian Manson (6-3, 225) had a team-high 5.5 tackles while sophomore defensive lineman Cooper Prochaska (6-0, 190) and Ashten Holmes (6-0, 200) each recorded sacks.
Liberty High (1-0) at Southeast Polk (1-0)
Where: Southeast Polk Stadium, 7 p.m.
Last season: Southeast Polk 38, Liberty High 35 (Class 5A semifinals)
Player to watch: Southeast Polk senior running back Drew Thompson rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries in a week one win over Ankeny Centennial
Key stat: Southeast Polk averaged 24 points per game during a 4-4 start to last season and has won six consecutive games since while averaging 36.8 points per game.
About the Rams: Southeast Polk won its fourth consecutive Class 5A state title last season defeating Liberty High 38-35 in the semifinals before rallying past West Des Moines Valley 38-35 in the 5A title game.
The Rams extended their winning streak to six with a 30-14 win over Ankeny Centennial in the season opener last Friday.
Junior quarterback Austin Mart completed 9-of-15 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown in the opener.
Junior Stanley Cooper rushed for 56 yards while senior Teague Cantrall led Southeast Polk with four receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Brayden Lewis had 2.5 tackles and two interceptions and senior Joel Thompson had 4.5 tackles and a sack as Southeast Polk limited Ankeny Centennial to 176 total yards.
About the Lightning: Liberty High is coming off the most successful season in program history that included a 10-2 record and a spot in the Class 5A semifinals.
The Lightning opened the season with a 15-14 home win over Cedar Falls, scoring the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:01 remaining.
Senior quarterback Reece Rettig (5-10, 175) completed 22-of-28 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions and also rushed for 54 yards in the win over the Tigers.
Senior Logan Laubenthal (5-9, 170) had a team-high six receptions for 47 yards while junior Leo Rozz (5-8, 140) caught five passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in week one.
Pryor Reiners (5-10, 160) caught five passes for 47 yards and Jordan Schroeder (X) had four receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore Cooper Lester had a team-high 5.5 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and senior linebacker Landon Bell (6-0, 210) had 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Solon (1-0) at Williamsburg (1-0)
Where: Bob Murphy Stadium in Williamsburg, 7:30 p.m.
Last season: Williamsburg 42, Solon 13
Player to watch: Williamsburg junior running back Dallin Sullivan (5-8, 170) rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and caught a 49-yard touchdown pass in a 44-0 win over Keokuk last Friday.
Key stat: Solon averaged 7.9 yards per play in a 36-13 win over Davenport Assumption and Williamsburg averaged 7.6 yards per play in a 44-0 win over Keokuk in week one.
About the Raiders: Williamsburg posted back-to-back 12-1 seasons that included a runner-up finish at a 3A state title in 2022 and 2023 before going 7-3 last season and falling to Independence in the opening-round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The Raiders opened the season with a 44-0 win at Keokuk on Friday holding the Chiefs to 96 yards of total offense including -22 yards rushing.
Williamsburg had 11.5 tackles for loss and four sacks in its week-one shutout, with junior Sawyer Kirby (5-10, 180) making 4.5 tackles for loss and senior Grady Wetjen (6-3, 200) making two tackles for loss with a sack.
Sophomore quarterback Cash Brown (6-0, 160) completed 6-of-15 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns with an interception and rushed for 52 yards against Keokuk.
Wetjen, Sullivan and Gibson Scott (5-10, 160) all had touchdown receptions in the season-opening win.
About the Spartans: Solon went 8-3 in 2024 and opened the 2025 season with a storm-delayed 36-13 win over Davenport Assumption at Spartan Stadium in Solon.
Senior quarterback Eli Kampman (6-0, 185) completed 15-of-25 passes for 272 yards and five touchdowns and also rushed for 36 yards in his first career start at quarterback in the win over the Knights.
Junior Maddox Kelley (5-10, 180) had nine receptions for 84 yards and three touchdowns in the season-opener while junior Kaden Hoeper (6-2, 180) had five catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior linebacker Kyler Jensen (6-0, 225) had a team-high nine tackles in the week-one win including two tackles for loss while junior linebacker Cody Milliman (6-1, 195) had 5.5 tackles.
Clear Creek Amana (1-0) at Davenport North (1-0)
Where: Brady Street Stadium,
Last season: Did not play
Player to watch: Davenport North junior quarterback Neil Brown (6-0, 185) completed 14-of-20 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for four yards in a 27-14 win over Muscatine last week.
Key stat: Clear Creek Amana has won six of its last eight games dating back to last season and is averaging 33.8 points per game during that stretch.
About the Wildcats: Davenport North posted its first winning season since 2019 last fall going 5-4.
The Wildcats opened the season with a 27-14 win over Muscatine, outscoring the Muskies 13-0 in the second half to snap a 14-14 halftime tie.
Davenport North limited Muscatine to 166 yards of total offense on 3.4 yards per play in the week-one win.
Senior Jaylin Reed (5-6, 140) led Davenport North with seven tackles including 1.5 for loss while senior Hunter Bennett (5-11, 200) had seven tackles.
Junior quarterback Neil Brown led a Davenport North offense that finished with 333 yards of total offense against Muscatine.
Senior Carson Williams (5-10, 181) rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 26 yards and senior Derrick Pena (5-11, 188) added 43 yards and a touchdown on the ground and had three receptions for 24 yards and two touchdowns.
About the Clippers: Coming off a 6-4 season last fall Clear Creek Amana opened the 2025 season with a 63-0 win over Davenport West.
The Clippers racked up 328 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in the win over the Falcons while averaging 13.1 yards per carry.
Four Clippers had better than 40 yards rushing and five different players had a rushing touchdown in the week-one win led by junior Noah Collis with 87 yards and two touchdowns and senior quarterback Conlan Poynton who rushed for 82 yards and two scores.
Poynton completed 4-of-13 passes for 44 yards with Nick Daniel making two receptions for 12 yards and Tay Seals catching a pass for 26 yards.
Junior defensive lineman Teagan Heisdorffer had four tackles with two tackles for loss and a sack to lead Clear Creek Amana.
West Branch (1-0) at Regina (1-0)
Where: Regal Field, 7 p.m.
Last season: Regina 28, West Branch 10
Player to watch: West Branch junior running back Keaton Gates rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-21 season-opening win over West Liberty.
Key stat: West Branch rushed for 372 yards in its season-opening win over West Liberty. The Bears rushed for 266 yards in the final five games of 2024 combined.
About the Bears: West Branch made the debut of head coach Matt Hughes as success with a 35-21 win over West Liberty at the Little Rose Bowl.
The Bears completed just one pass for -1 yards but averaged 7.9 yards per carry while racking up 372 yards on the ground.
Keaton Gates led the way while Cooper Gates added 48 rushing yards and a touchdown and Brennen Dale had a 12-yard touchdown run in the win.
Senior defensive lineman Michael Montgomery and Lincoln Naber each had strong games in the opener.
Montgomery had five tackles and Naber had 5.5 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Junior Spencer Green had 4.5 tackles, Cooper Gates had two tackles for loss among his 3.5 tackles and senior defensive back Griffin Seydel had a pair of interceptions in the week-one win.
About the Regals: Regina had a 9-2 season end last fall with a 21-14 loss to Wilton in the Class 1A quarterfinals.
The Regals got a measure of revenge last Friday with a 42-20 win at Wilton in the season opener for both teams.
Regina rolled up 353 yards of total offense in the week-one win over the Beavers including 233 yards on the ground.
Junior Savion Miller (5-10, 200) rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns in the win while sophomore Gabriel Hegelheimer (5-11, 200) added 66 yards and a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Kyle Tracy (5-11, 180) completed 13-of-17 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 39 yards in the win.
Junior Tate Wallace (6-3, 235) had seven receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown as six different Regals had a reception.
Wallace also had a team-high seven tackles and a sack while junior linebacker Roan Eckhoff (6-1, 210) had 5.5 tackles and senior James Whisler (5-11, 170) had five tackles.
