SOLON – Solon seniors Sydney Dee and Izzy Frees continued their season-long string of individual success on Monday.
It is the team success that has accompanied the stellar senior seasons for Dee and Frees that have made it an extra special final prep season for the two Spartan leaders.
“Our team, it makes it so fun to come out every single day,” Frees said. “Even when we have morning practice everyone is excited to be there to see all your friends. Obviously, we’ve had individual success but we also have had team success like breaking school records and that’s what makes it really fun.”
On Monday it was Dee and Frees again leading the way for Solon as the Spartans continued an impressive late-season push with a team title at the WAMAC East Divisional meet.
Dee shot a five-over-par 77 to earn medalist honors and Frees finished third with an 85 as Solon rolled to the team title with a 337.
“It feels great going out on my high school career on a team that is winning meets,” Dee said. “It’s really fun to hear about everyone’s round at the end and hear about the great shots they made and we talk about our bad shots too but it’s almost always a positive conversation.”
Dee and Frees have been the headliners for what has already been a memorable season for the Spartans.
Solon has already set new 9-hole and 18-hole school records this season after shooting a program-best 334 on its way to the team title at its own Spartan Invitational last week.
“I am just so happy that we were all working hard during the offseason,” Dee said. “We came out to our first meet of the season shooting good scores and I think we still know we can be better.”
Led by its senior duo the Spartans continued to impress on Monday.
Solon finished 39 strokes in front of runner-up West Delaware and had five golfers finish in the top 10 including four in the top five.
“Last Monday our goal was to break 330 and we got 334 and today we wanted to break 329 which we didn’t but it’s always about those new little goals and we are getting close,” Frees said. “Our coaches keeps setting new goals for us and it’s fun to try to meet those every time.”
Dee led the way with a 77 which was six strokes better than runner-up Andrea Wubbena from West Delaware.
“I would say it was an A minus,” Dee said. “I saved some good pars, I missed some good birdie opportunities so it was a pretty solid round all together.”
Frees finished third with an 85 and was followed closely by teammates Jaya Farlinger, who was fourth with an 87 and Taylor Jett who finished fifth with an 88.
“I felt like a rebounded well today,” Frees said. “I had a lot of up and downs, my driver was pretty sporadic so being able to chip well was pretty helpful.”
Sophomore Macy Fuller finished in ninth place with a 90 for the Spartans and junior Emma Phelps shot a 93 to finish 11th.
