TIFFIN – For a coach putting together a track and field lineup a versatile athlete is a valuable asset.
For Clear Creek Amana head coach Ben Robison that flexible piece in the lineup is junior Elizabeth Timmerman.
“She is about as well-rounded of a kid as we have,” Robison said of Timmerman.
Timmerman showed off her flexibility on Friday on her home track at the Jane Astor Relays at Clipper Field in Tiffin.
Timmerman was runner-up in a pair of individual events and helped the Clippers to a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay as Clear Creek Amana placed fourth in the Class A divisional team standings at it home meet.
“Home meets are my favorite, it makes me more comfortable competing at home,” Timmerman said. “I know what to expect here, I know how the track feels or how the board feels in long jump so it’s a lot more comfortable.”
Timmerman finished second in both the long jump and 200 on Friday as Clear Creek Amana racked up 87 points.
Linn-Mar won the team title with 141.5 points followed by Mid-Prairie with 96 and Solon with 94.
Timmerman, who finished seventh at the state meet in the long jump last season as a sophomore, was runner-up to state leader Abby Mecklenburg of Linn-Mar in the long jump on Friday with a career-best mark of 17-1 ¾.
Mecklenburg won with a leap of 19-1.
“I’ve worked a lot in the offseason and tried to focus on my technique,” Timmerman said of long jump. “I’m really excited to see what I can do this year.”
While Timmerman has had high levels of success in the long jump earlier in her career she enjoys her time on the track just as much.
On Friday Timmerman was runner-up in the 200 in 26.57 and teamed with Kendall Ronnfeldt, Anna Johnson and Addilyn Scheetz to set a school record in the 4×100 with a time of 50.54.
“I just love running in general,” Timmerman said. “I love going as fast as you can and trying to beat the people around you and I love relays because you are working as a team.
The strong day for Timmerman was part of an overall impressive effort for Clear Creek Amana in its home event.
Jaylin Herring won the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:08.75 and joined Scheetz, Bella Behrens and Sydney Pfeiffer on the shuttle hurdle relay team that finished runner-up in 1:08.78.
“I think we competed really well,” Robison said. “We definitely are not running at full speed yet. We are quietly putting good stuff together and I think once we get the plan to all come around we will be in a good spot.”
Scheetz was third in the 100 hurdles in 16.52 in addition to her legs on the shuttle hurdle and 4×100 relays.
“We dropped time tonight so that’s exciting,” Scheetz said of the shuttle hurdle relay. “I felt like we all ran really well tonight and we just want to keep getting better.”
West High’s Sophia Olivo won the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.71 and Kate Van Waning won the 800 in 2:26.51 as the Trojans finished sixth with 75.5 points.
Solon was led by Grace Hoeper who finished third in the 400 in 1:02.89 and was runner-up in the 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley relays.
