Boys Wrestling Roundup: West High Crowns Four Champions; Qualifies Five For State at District 8 Meet

West High had four individual champions among five state qualifiers while placing third as a team at the Class 3A, District 8 tournament on Saturday at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.
Alexander Pierce, Matthew Tran, Cole Krutzfeldt and Justin Avila all won individual titles and Randale Kelly added a runner-up finish as West High rolled up 159.5 points to finish in a tie for third with Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Host Waverly-Shell Rock won the team title with 193 points followed by Linn-Mar with 176 points.
Pierce won the 113-pound title going 3-0 with a pair of pins on Saturday.
Second-ranked Pierce (44-2) earned a 12-4 major decision win over seventh-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock freshman Kipton Lewis (37-8) in the title match to secure a third consecutive trip to the state tournament.
Tran won the 120-pound title capping an impressive run through the bracket with a 21-5 tech fall over Linn-Mar’s Will Smith in the title match.
Sixth-ranked Tran (40-12) reached the championship with a first-period pin and a 26-10 tech fall over DeShawn Parrow of Waterloo East in the semifinals.
Krutzfeldt (40-4) went 3-0 on the way to the 138-pound title.
Fourth-ranked Krutzfeldt had a pair of first-period pins before winning a 4-2 decision over No. 12 Hud Turner of Linn-Mar in the title match.
Third-ranked Avila (45-3) went 2-0 to win the 150-pound championship.
Avila downed seventh-ranked Noah Howk-Erwin for the third time this season, 9-7 in the championship match.
Kelly (32-17) finished runner-up at 285 pounds falling to Keeron Harris-Neasley of Waterloo East in the championship match.
