City High Junior Emmanuel Caps Amazing State Tournament Run With Third-Place Finish

CORALVILLE – There is an old sports adage – it’s not how you start it’s how you finish.
That was Shaona Emmanuel this week at the Class 2A girls state wrestling tournament.
Emmanuel bounced back from an opening-round pin to win five consecutive consolation matches, all by fall, to become the highest ranked state finishing in City High history.
On Friday evening Emmanuel completed her improbable run through the Class 2A 155-pound consolation bracket with another emphatic victory.
Third-ranked Emmanuel (37-6) pinned sixth-ranked Marlee Pittet of Western Iowa in 1:32 in the 155-pound third-place match on Friday evening.
With the third-place finish Emmanuel becomes the second state place winner in City High program history and the highest placer ever for the Little Hawks.
The path for Emmanuel to her first career state medal was impressive.
After being pinned by Amaziah Twillie of Burlington in the opening round, Emmanuel won five consecutive matches by first-period pin.
None of the five pins took longer than 92 seconds and two took less than a minute.
Emmanuel posted consecutive pins of Bella Bruins of Raccoon River-Northwest and Bailey Schuster on Thursday.
She advanced to the third-place match with pins of seventh-ranked Abigail Chyma and Twillie on Friday morning.
On Friday evening Emmanuel completed her run with a pin of Pittet (38-6) in the third-place match.
The third-place finish Emmanuel helped City High finish 26th in the team standings with 26 points.
Raccoon River-Northwest claimed the first ever Class 2A state title while East Buchanan won the Class 1A title.
