For the first time in more than three decades West High will have a new coach leading its baseball program
The Trojans didn’t need to go far to find its next leader.
Former assistant coach Jamie O’Meara was announced as the new head baseball coach at West High on Monday through a press released from athletic director BJ Mayer.
O’Meara replaces Iowa Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame member Charlie Stumpff who announced his retirement in September after 32 years as the head coach at West High.
“We are excited to have Jamie take over the reins of the baseball program,” Mayer wrote in the release. “He has worked and learned under Hall of Fame coach Charlie Stumpff and will bring some of his own ideas and vision to the program. He helps at many events, knows our school and community and what it takes to get athletes to compete at a high level. We look forward to his leadership.”
O’Meara has spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach at West High and Fort Dodge.
A University of Iowa graduate, O’Meara has spent the past nine seasons as an assistant at West High.
O’Meara also founded and coached the University of Iowa Baseball Club and has served on the board for the West High feeder program Trojan Baseball Club.
“I am deeply honored to be named the head baseball coach at Iowa City West,” O’Meara said in the release. “Like a turtle on a fence post, I know I did not get here alone. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the families, players, coaches and administration and the entire West community for their unwavering support. I am eager to bring my passion, dedication and vision to the program. There is a tremendous foundation at Iowa City West that I can’t wait to build upon.”
West High went 20-22 last season and advanced to the substate title game.
