IOWA CITY – City High wasn’t at its best at its home meet on Thursday and the Little Hawks were alright with that.
Even at less than their best City High was still pretty impressive.
City High put three runners in the top 10 and finished runner-up as a team at its own Bud Williams Invitational on a warm and sunny afternoon at Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City.
“I don’t think that was our best performance of the year by any means but I think we showed up well,” City High junior Linus McRoberts said. “I think it’s a good place for us to be at this point of the season but we definitely have more to go.”
McRoberts led a trio of top-10 finishers for the Little Hawks as Class 4A fourth-ranked City High finished 30 points behind third-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in the team standings.
Class 4A No. 13 Ankeny Centennial was third with 79 points, 4A No. 18 Pleasant Valley was fourth with 89 points and 3A second-ranked Pella rounded out a stout top five with 117 points.
3A seventh-ranked Clear Creek Amana was seventh with 164 points.
“Life and cross country are similar, it’s a roller coaster,” City High coach Jayme Skay said. “Just like the course has hills, life has hills, ups and downs the key is you don’t worry too much about those up hills or the down hills just like life. We aren’t tapering, we aren’t preparing for this meet and we had a tough workout on Monday, it’s homecoming week it’s just part of the ebb and flow of a season and we aren’t in our top shape right now and we don’t want them in the top shape right now.”
McRoberts continued his strong season by placing seventh in a time of 17:43.9.
Pella junior Canaan Dunham pulled away from the lead pack over the final two miles to win in a time of 15:42.3.
Ankeny Centennial junior Cohen Moll was runner-up in 16:16.6 followed by Bennett Allred of Cedar Rapids Prairie in 16:24.5.
“I always try to get out as fast as I can and try to settle in,” McRoberts said. “I wanted to settle in with that lead pack and see where that takes me and today I fell off a little bit but I tried my best to stay on those lead guys.”
City High junior Max McDowell was ninth in 16:50.8 while senior George Karr finished 10th in 16:51.5.
Sophomore David Randall placed 16th in 17:08 for the Little Hawks.
“I wasn’t in the lead the whole time so it’s nice to have guys in our pack to run with and to push you,” McRoberts said. “I always have some one pushing me.”
Despite temperatures in the upper 80s the Little Hawks performed well against a field that featured seven ranked teams.
Emmett Palmberg was 20th in 17:14.9 and Jarris Prottsman was 25th in 17:20.4.
“The heat definitely makes it a littler tougher,” McRoberts said. “We’ve learned to deal with the warm weather and I think everyone performed pretty well today.”
Clear Creek Amana was led by Isaac Sorensen who finished 27th in 17:27.4 and Brock Hilsman who was 28th in 17:27.8.
