For the second year in a row City High will be sending three wrestlers to the girls state tournament.

Molly Carlson, Eliza Mitchell and Annabelle Stelpflug all secured spots at the state meet on Friday with top-four finishes at the Region 3 qualifier at Hy Vee Hall in Des Moines.

Carlson finished runner-up at 170 pounds to qualify for the state meet for the second time while Mitchell and Stelpflug each earned their first state tournament appearance with fourth-place finishes.

Carlson (29-11) went 3-1 on Friday on her way to the runner-up finish, falling to sixth-ranked Briar Blake of North Tama via second-period pin in the title match.

After back-to-back pins in her first two matches Carlson won a 11-3 major decision over Ella Machin of Newton to reach the title match.

Mitchell and Stelpflug each had slightly longer paths to state meet berths on Friday.

Mitchell (27-18) went 4-2 to finish fourth at 105 pounds, winning three consecutive consolation matches after being pinned in the quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Brianna Wolfer of Albia.

The freshman earned her state meet spot with a second-period pin of Ella Hron of Ankeny in the consolation semifinals before falling to sixth-ranked Serenity Turner of Pella in the third-place match.

Stelpflug followed the same path to a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds.

After being pinned by Jenah Gray of Dallas Center-Grimes in the quarterfinal Stelpflug won three consecutive matches all by first-period fall.

Stelpflug needed just 29 seconds to pin Karlee Akers of Winterset in the consolation semifinals to secure a spot at state.

City High finished eighth as a team with 97 points while Ankeny won the team title with 277 points followed by Dallas Center-Grimes with 177 and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 161.
