Baseball Roundup: Liberty High Advances to Substate Semifinal With Win Over Davenport North

Liberty High took the first step toward a second consecutive state tournament appearance on Friday.
The Lightning overcame an early deficit to down Davenport North 5-3 in a Class 4A, Substate 2 quarterfinal on Friday in North Liberty.
Liberty High improved to 21-17 with the win and will host Davenport Central (16-20) in a Substate 2 semifinal on Monday.
Davenport Central defeated Bettendorf 3-0 in a Substate 2 quarterfinal on Friday in Bettendorf.
The winner of the Liberty High and Davenport Central semifinal matchup will face top-seeded Cedar Rapids Prairie (33-6) in the Substate 2 title game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
Liberty High trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the third inning before senior Luke Ramsey led off the inning with a single and scored on a two-out single by Luke Mayer that cut the lead to 3-2.
The Lightning took their first lead with a three-run fourth inning that featured singles by Braden O’Connor and Ryan Schmierer and an RBI double by Ramsey.
Jackson Tubbs earned the win for Liberty High tossing 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
Tubbs struck out seven and walked one before giving way to Owen Norris who struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning.
Ramsey was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and scored three runs to lead Liberty High while Schmierer had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run.
Mason Gardner and Mayer each had a hit and drove in a run and O’Connor had a hit and scored a run.
