DES MOINES – West Branch kept three wrestlers alive into Friday and Regina sent two wrestlers into the third day of the Class 1A state wrestling meet on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Regina junior Ian Udell and West Branch freshman Cooper Gates each dropped into the consolation bracket after losing quarterfinal matches on Thursday.

Third-ranked Kolby Scott of MVAO won an 8-1 decision over Udell (33-12) in a 182-pound quarterfinal.

Udell will face Logan Montgomery (38-8) of Southeast Warren in a fourth-round consolation match on Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Second-ranked Alburnett senior Carson Klostermann won a 15-0 tech fall over Gates in a 152-pound semifinal.

Gates (35-5) will face Mediapolis freshman Kyler Crow (34-6) in a consolation match on Friday morning.

Regina and West Branch each had wrestlers remain alive with consecutive consolation wins on Thursday.

West Branch juniors Logan Wright and Cale Seydel each won a pair of consolation matches to move a win away from securing a state medal.

Last year’s eighth-place finisher at 220 pounds, Wright pinned Clayton Schroeder of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in 5:20 and won a 4-2 decision over sixth-ranked Indy Ferguson of Lisbon in a tiebreaker in the 220-pound consolation bracket.

Seydel (27-15) stayed alive at 145 pounds with a pin of Logan-Magnolia’s Harley Christensen and a 12-10 sudden victory win over Ryder Koele of Woodbury Central.

Regina junior Will Aitchson (35-17) won a 10-2 major decision over Treycen Rollene of Northwood-Kensett and added a 6-3 decision over fourth-ranked Ryan Stortenbecker of East Mills to stay live at 145 pounds.
