Substate Baseball Roundup: Seventh-ranked Solon Advances to Substate Semifinals

Class 3A seventh-ranked Solon built an early lead then broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning on its way to an 8-1 win over Newton in a Class 3A, Substate 5 opener on Friday in Solon.
Solon (28-11) advances to the Substate 5 semifinal where it will host Carlisle (16-19) on Monday at 7 p.m. while Newton closed the season 9-20.
Newton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an Eli Stewart RBI single but Solon responded with eight unanswered runs to push its winning streak to three.
Brett White went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBI and Carson Shive was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Spartans.
Gehrig Turner had a hit and drove in a run and Jackson Ryan had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run for Solon.
Blake Timmons earned the win allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two.
Timmons also scored two runs while Brady Jeworrek, Cade Chapman and Kinnick Pusteoska scored runs.
