City High Senior Smith Commits to Northern State

When Egan Smith and his City High baseball teammates finally got the chance to play baseball last summer they made the most of it advancing to the state tournament for the first time in 2003.
After the global pandemic forced Smith to to await word on whether he would get to play last summer Smith decided he wasn’t going to waste any time locking up his plans to play after high school.
Smith announced he would play collegiate baseball at Northern State University in Aberdeen South Dakota on Tuesday with a post on social media.
“I’m very excited to announce I am furthering my academic and athletic career at North State University,” Smith wrote in a post on Twitter. “I’d like to thank my coaches and teachers for all they’ve done and especially thank my family for supporting me in this process.”
Smith emerged as one of the leaders of the City High pitching staff during the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season.
The left-handed throwing Smith posted a 1-3 record and a 3.57 ERA in 17 2/3 innings, allowing 16 hits while striking out 12 and walking five.
Smith, who also plays center field, hit .250 with six runs scored as City High went 11-9 and advanced to the Class 4A state tournament.
Smith had two hits and scored a run in a 7-6 state quarterfinal loss to Dubuque Hempstead.
An NCAA Division II program and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Northern State was 26-25 in its last full season in 2019.
