Softball Roundup: West Spins One-Hitter as Solon Splits With No. 4 Mount Vernon

After Mount Vernon sophomore Jenna Sprague stymied Solon in the opener of a WAMAC East Division doubleheader Solon senior Kayla West returned the favor in the nightcap.
West followed up a three-hit shutout by Sprague in the opener with a one-hit gem of her own in the nightcap as the ranked Highway 1 rivals split a pair of 1-0 games on Wednesday in Mount Vernon.
Class 3A No. 13 Solon (16-11) snapped a five-game losing skid with its win in the nightcap while fourth-ranked Mount Vernon moved to 15-4 on the season with its just its second loss in 14 games.
Solon managed just three hits off Sprague in the opener as the Mustangs made a run in the fifth inning stand up.
Ava Stebral doubled and Meghan O’Neill and Carly Ellison each had singles for the Spartans.
Ellison took the tough luck loss, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out three and walking one in six innings.
West helped Solon salvage a hit with her one-hit shutout in the nightcap.
The senior was one out from a no-hitter but Lauren Ryan reached on a single with two outs in the seventh inning.
Solon had just two hits against Mount Vernon starter Summer Brand but took advantage of a pair of Mustangs errors to score the only run of the game in the sixth.
Hilary Wilson had a hit and scored a run and West added a single for the Spartans.
