West High Wins First Mississippi Valley Conference Wrestling Title Since 2012

The West High wrestling team is back on top of the Mississippi Valley Conference.
West High crowned five champions and pulled away from the field to win its first Mississippi Valley Conference meet since 2012 on Saturday at Dubuque Hempstead.
The Trojans rolled up 209.5 points, 22.5 more than runner-up Cedar Rapids Prairie as West High went from eighth place at the MVC meet a year ago to conference champion.
Sophomores Grant O’Dell and Hunter Garvin, juniors Graham Gambrall and Ashton Barker and senior Will Hoeft all won individual titles as West High pulled away from a tight pack to claim the title.
Second to fifth-place finishers Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Linn-Mar and Cedar Falls were separated by just 25 points while City High was seventh with 132.5 points.
O’Dell and Garvin each pinned their way to MVC titles.
Fifth-ranked O’Dell (22-6) won the 106-pound title with three consecutive first-period pins. He needed just 45 seconds to deck Henry Koehn of Cedar Falls in the title match.
Garvin (26-3) was equally impressive en rout to his second consecutive MVC title.
The top-ranked sophomore posted four first-period falls, including a 32 second pin of Jack Plagge of Cedar Falls in the title match.
Gambrall became a three-time MVC champion with a 7-3 decision over Dylan Falck of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the 145-pound final.
Ranked fourth at 145 pounds, Gambrall reached the 145-pound title match with a pair of pins and a major decision while improving to 29-5 on the season.
The Trojans got back-to-back titles from Barker and Hoeft at 170 and 182 pounds to lock up their first conference title in seven seasons.
Fifth-ranked Barker (22-5) avenged an earlier loss with an 8-3 decision over No. 4 Ryan Plummer of Linn-Mar in the 170-pound championship.
Second-ranked Hoeft dominated on his way to the 182-pound championship, earning a 20-5 tech fall over Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s tenth-ranked Jay Oostendorp in the title match.
Hoeft (16-1) had a pair of pins to reach the championship match where he picked up the first MVC crown of his career.
Brett Pelfrey (16-14) added a runner-up finish for West High at 220-pounds falling to Gavin Bascom of Cedar Rapids Kennedy 7-5 in the championship match.
City High got a title from freshman phenom Ben Kueter who won a 5-3 decision over third-ranked Linn-Mar freshman Tate Naaktgeboren in the 160-pound championship.
Sixth-ranked Kueter improved to 17-0 on the season with four wins on Saturday reaching the title match with pins in 49 and 26 seconds and a 20-5, second-period tech fall against Tony Lyon of Western Dubuque in the semifinals.
Reece Caven added a third-place finish for City High at 145 pounds while Garrett Borman (120), Reese Hayden (126) and Gable Mitchell (152) all placed fourth.
Liberty High got sixth-place finish from Elijah Terwilleger at 152 pounds and an eighth-place finish from Jaxson Morris at 120 pounds while placing 16th with 15 points.
