Baseball Roundup: Klosterman Tosses 1-hit Shutout as City High Sweeps Dubuque Wahlert

A pair of freshmen pitchers provided a big boost for City High in the middle of a busy week on Wednesday.
Freshman Gable Mitchell threw three scoreless innings of relief in the opener and fellow frosh John Klosterman tossed a one-hit shutout in game two as City High swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Dubuque Wahlert at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
City High won the opener 8-5 and took the nightcap 2-0 while improving to 8-2 on the season and 6-2 in MVC play while Dubuque Wahlert dropped to 4-4 and 3-4 in MVC play.
Mitchell picked up the win in the opener allowing just three hits while striking out five in three scoreless innings in relief of Garrett Bormann.
The Little Hawks snapped a 5-5 tie with three runs in the sixth inning of the opener and Mitchell worked a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
Bormann had three hits and drove in three runs and Cade Hanrahan was 2-for-3 with two runs to lead City High.
Mitchell tripled and drove in a run while Liam McComas was 2-for-3 with a triple and DJ Heck drove in a run and scored a run.
Klosterman struck out three and walked four in a one-hit shutout that completed the sweep.
Zach Kuepker had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run and Hanrahan had an RBI double in the nightcap.
City High travels to Cedar Falls on Friday and faces Regina on Saturday at Banks Field.

Top-ranked Xavier Sweeps West High
Class 3A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier swept 4A No. 4 West High in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Wednesday in Iowa City.
Xavier won the opener 3-0 behind a four-hit shutout from senior Bryson Bastian and took the nightcap 16-1 in four innings thanks in large part to a 10-run third inning.
West High dropped to 7-4 on the season and 4-4 in MVC play while Xavier improved to 8-1 and 5-1 in MVC play with the sweep.
Casey Marvin took the loss in the opener for West High allowing three runs, two earned on five hits while striking out nine in a complete game.
The Trojans managed just four hits off Bastian as Jason Strunk, Chase Calderwood and Marcus Morgan singled and Ben Madden had a double.
West High had five hits in the nightcap, with Collin Leavy, Matthew Cupp, Ian Gluesing and Madden singling and Ryan Cooper adding a double.
Alex Swack started and took the loss allowing six runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
