Softball Roundup: City High Remains Unbeaten With Sweep of Western Dubuque

Only two Class 5A softball teams are still sporting spotless records this season and City High is one of them.
Class 5A fourth-ranked City High stayed unbeaten with sweep of Western Dubuque on Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Epworth.
City High won the opener 6-3 and took the nightcap 10-4 to improve to 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in MVC play.
Western Dubuque dropped to 5-7 and 3-6 in MVC play.
Ayana Lindsey homered and picked up the win in the opener allowing three runs on two hits while striking out six in a complete game.
Brooke Bormann went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Brianna Bentler double and scored a run in the opener.
Five different players had doubles as City High bounced out 15 hits in game two.
Ella Cook went 4-for-5 with a double and six RBI and also earned the win in the circle allowing one run on three hits in six innings.
Jayden Young went 3-for-4 with a double and Keli Potter had two hits and drove in three runs.
Lindsey and Carey Koenig each had two hits including a double in the win.

Solon and Mount Vernon Split Top-10 Doubleheader
Solon and Mount Vernon split a WAMAC East Division doubleheader between top-10 teams on Tuesday in Solon.
Class 3A fourth-ranked Solon won the opener 13-10 while 3A No. 10 Mount Vernon took the nightcap 12-2 in five innings.
Solon moved to 9-1 on the season and 9-1 in WAMAC play while Mount Vernon is 7-3 and 4-2 in conference play.
Skylar Stookey homered twice and Hilary Wilson homered and both drove in three runs to lead Solon in the opener.
The Spartans had six extra-base hits among 14 hits in game as seven different Spartans had a hit.
Taylor Ryan was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs and Jada Buffington went 3-for-4 and scored a run.
Monet Barnhouse, Stookey and Taylor Moore all had two hits for the Spartans. Moore doubled twice and scored two runs and Barnhouse drove in two runs.
Kayla West earned the win allowing 10 runs, five earned, on eight hits in six innings.
Mount Vernon used a nine-run third inning to break open a one-run game in the nightcap.
Wilson, Stookey, Moore, Buffington and Ava Stebral all had hits for Solon in game two.

No. 14 Hempstead Sweeps Liberty High
Class 5A No. 14 Dubuque Hempstead swept Liberty High in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Dubuque winning the opener 4-3 in eight innings and taking the nightcap 9-4.
Liberty High dropped to 4-6 on the season and 4-2 in MVC play while Dubuque Hempstead improved to 7-3 on the season and in conference play.
Kaylie Springer scored Carissa Elskamp with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Dubuque Hempstead to a win in game one.
Kara Maiers started for Liberty High and struck out 16 while allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings.
Kinsley Robertson took the loss allowing a run in 2/3 innings of relief.
Brylee Klosterman went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead Liberty High while Tiffany Jones had a hit and drove in a run.
Addie Schmierer and Blythe Geiman each had a hit and scored a run in the opener.
In the nightcap Klosterman went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs and Schmierer and Raquel Trolliet each went 2-for 4.
Miranda Jones and Tiffany Jones each had a hit and drove in a run and Kennedy Daughtery was 2-for-3 with a double.
Robertson took the loss allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings.
