Solon Crowns Five Champs, Sends Six to State at 2A, District 8

The week of the state wrestling tournament is once again setting up to be a busy time for Solon.
Solon secured a third consecutive trip to the state dual meet on Wednesday and Saturday the Spartans clinched state meet spots for six wrestlers at the Class 2A, District 8 Meet at Washington.
Class 2A sixth-ranked Solon crowned five champions and ran away with the team title finishing with 147.5 points to outdistance host Washington by 39.5 points.
Hayden Taylor, Zeb Gnida, Zack Bevans, Jax Flynn and Mike Hoyle all earned district titles for Solon while Andy Brokaw advanced to the state tournament with a runner-up finish.
Gnida, Bevans, Brokaw and Hoyle are all making return trips to the state meet which opens on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena while Taylor and Flynn secured their first state meet appearances on Saturday.
Third-ranked Taylor (47-2) won the match of the day in the 126-pound final, earning a 5-3 decision over No. 4 Kayden Kauzlarich of Centerville.
Gnida (37-9) defeated Cody Calvelage of Louisa-Muscatine 9-2 in the 132-pound title match while Bevans (44-5) claimed the 152-pound crown with a 3-1 win over No. 8 Coy Ruess of West Liberty.
Flynn (43-5) won the 170-pound champions with a 20-4 tech. fall of Davis County junior Caden Hill and a second-period pin of Tucker Moore of Burlington Notre Dame.
Hoyle (43-1), ranked third at 220 pounds, needed 54 seconds to pin West Liberty sophomore Kobe Simon in the title match.
Brokaw (37-11) dropped a 10-2 major decision to Austin Beaver of West Liberty in the 160-pound championship match.
