A year ago Ryan Schott snuck into the quarterfinals with a 3-2 opening round win in his debut at the state wrestling meet.
In his return trip Schott again reached the quarterfinals but this time the Regina senior did it emphatically.
Schott won a 13-1 major decision over Central Decatur senior Luke Jones at 160-pound on Thursday in the opening round of the Class 1A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Second-ranked Schott improved to 45-2 with the win and will take on Lake Mills freshman Elijah Wagner (40-14) in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
Schott is seeking his first semifinal appearance after going 1-2 in the state meet last season.
Regina junior Nick Milder had his season end abruptly on Thursday with back-to-back losses to top six opponents at 170 pounds.
Milder (26-6) opened with 3-0 loss to fourth-ranked Cael Krueger of Denver at 170 pounds and fell to sixth-ranked Gunnar Grunsted of Panorama 3-0 in a first-round consolation match.
