IOWA CITY – Just as it planned all season the Regina boys cross country team peaked at the right time on Thursday.
It just wasn’t quite enough for the Regals to extend their season one more week.
Regina turned in it’s best performance of the season on Thursday but missed qualifying for the state meet by one spot placing fourth at the Class 2A state qualifier at Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Second-ranked Chariton won the team title with 27 followed by No. 13 Mediapolis with 106 and tenth-ranked Tipton with 111.
Regina was fourth with 139 points.
“You always want to go to state but they have shown so much grit and determination this year I am so just so proud of them,” Regina coach Chad Swope said. “They ran well and I told them I don’t care if you are first I don’t care if you are last if you give you best effort everything else will take care of itself. Our mantra is nothing but your best and go out and cross that line you know you gave everything you had and everything else will take care of itself.
Last week on the same course Regina finished seventh out of 13 teams.
The Regals were 64 points behind Tipton at the RVC meet last week and trailed No. 20 Anamosa by 54 points in its seventh-place finish.
Regina made a huge jump on Thursday narrowly missing a spot at the state meet while finishing in front of RVC foes West Liberty and Anamosa that bested the Regals last week at conference.
“I just wanted to push my teammates the whole race,” Regina junior Cobin Daniel said. “I knew we needed a lot to make state and we didn’t but I think we gave it our all and pushed it to a level we hadn’t been yet.”
Daniel led Regina placing 23rd in a personal-best time of 18:15.6.
The time was more than 12 seconds faster than Daniel ran at the conference meet on the same course last week.
“Today I had a good pr, these last couple of weeks I’d been struggling with sickness and an ankle injury so I really just wanted to prove to myself I could do it today,” Daniel said. “My teammates pushed me to be the best I could and I had a great race.”
Sophomore Huck Zahasky finished 25th in 18:25.1 and freshman Christiano Pratt placed 28th in 18:34 for Regina.
Freshman Nik Polyak was 30th in 18:39.4 and junior Hugh Loening finished 33rd in 18:45.3.
The one senior in the Regina lineup, Evan White was 39th in 18:52.3 and sophomore Wyatt Kaeding was 40th in 18:54.8.
“They are good kids,” Swope said. “They are really good kids and I love being around them and I’m not ready for the season to be done yet but we have a lot of young ones coming back so the future is bright.”
The Regina girls finished eighth with 199 points.
Top-ranked West Marshall won the girls team title with 44 points while Mid-Prairie was runner-up with 47 and Grundy Center was third with 103.
Harper Erwin finished 26th in 22:45.7 to lead Regina while Etta Winders placed 32nd in 23:18.
Ellie Johnson was 36th in 23:28.2 and Ruby Eastman placed 49th in a time of 24:16.3.
