IOWA CITY – Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison isn’t giving pre-race speeches focusing on the importance of winning meets in the month of September.
Instead, Robison often has a simple instruction for his squad.
“One thing coach always says is ‘take care of business’,” Clear Creek Amana sophomore Carson Meskimen said. “That’s our saying and I think we do a really good job of regardless of which meet it is we are holding each other accountable and running to our best potential.”
Meskimen and the Clippers handled business at the Bob Brown Cross Country Classic on Thursday.
Led by a third-place finish by Meskimen Class 3A No. 10 Clear Creek Amana had five runners in the top 15 and rolled to the team title with 44 points at Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Seniors Nic Schieltz and Jackson VanHorn finished sixth and eighth respectively as Clear Creek Amana finished 20 points in front of runner-up 3A No. 12 Western Dubuque.
“Last year we were really spread out with our times and this year we’ve been really consistent with our times and we’ve done a great job in training,” Meskimen said. “I’m excited for what we can do this season.”
Meskimen highlighted a strong showing from the Clippers placing third in a time of 16:33.54.
Defending state champion Quentin Nauman of Western Dubuque won the individual title in 15:48.52 and Washington senior Andrew Rees was runner-up in 16:33.08.
Meskimen was right behind finishing third in 16:33.54.
“Physically he’s gotten stronger and he’s put the mileage in but I think he’s a lot more confident in his race tactics,” Robison said of Meskimen. “That is paying off beautifully for him.”
Schieltz finished sixth in a time of 17:26.09 while VanHorn was eighth in 17:34.13.
Sophomore Quade Jensen placed 13th in 17:56.17 and senior Caden Burkle was 15th in 17:57.06.
“We lost two really good guys from last year and we had to fill those shoes this year and some kids have definitely stepped up and filled those shoes,” Schieltz said. “Our three through seven can run pretty close together and as we tighten that pack we are only going to get better.”
Less than 30 seconds separated the third finishing Clipper, VanHorn and the Clippers sixth finisher, junior Mason Miller.
“Coming into it I thought the key to our success was having our three, four, five and six as close as possible,” Robison said. “We are closer together now than I thought we would be.”
Class 3A No. 17 Solon had three sophomores finish in the top 22 on its way to a third-place team finish with 97 points.
2A sixth-ranked Anamosa was fourth with 122 followed by Washington with 134 points.
Host Regina finished ninth with 229 points.
Solon was led by sophomore Anders Holmes who finished seventh in 17:30.41 while sophomores Deacon Waddell and Preston Raasch finished 20th and 22nd respectively.
Senior Rene Meza finished 24th for Solon and freshman Brooks Kabela was 28th in 18:36.13.
“Our boys are still super young,” Solon coach Emy Williams said. “As these freshman and sophomores are really starting to learn and understand I am excited to see what they can do this season.”
Regina was led by senior Evan White who was 30th in 18:39.84 while senior Brendan Olney was 44th in 19:16.82.
