SOLON – There wasn’t much that Clear Creek Amana could say it did exceptionally well on Monday in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Class 3A second-ranked Williamsburg.
In the mind of Clear Creek Amana head coach Jodie Scheetz what was lacking most on Monday in the two losses to the Raiders was the Clipper offense.
After managing just two runs in each game against Williamsburg on Monday the Clipper bats got back on track in a big way on Wednesday.
Class 4A sixth-ranked Clear Creek Amana hammered 21 hits and scored 22 runs in a sweep of Solon in a WAMAC Conference cross-divisional doubleheader in Solon.
“Monday was tough on us for sure, we didn’t play like we have been and didn’t hit the ball like we needed to,” Scheetz said. “Tonight (hitting) was definitely the focus and we did a much better job.”
Clear Creek Amana hammered 14 hits in an 11-6 win in the nightcap and completed the sweep with an 11-0 four-inning win in the nightcap.
The Clippers improved to 26-8 on the season and 17-3 in WAMAC Conference games while Solon dropped to 16-16 on the year and 9-11 in conference action.
“After the two losses on Monday we realized that wasn’t us, we are a good team we are better than that,” Clear Creek Amana senior McKenna Kelley said. “We all came together these two games and played together.”
Kelley was part of a huge day at the plate for the Clippers.
The senior went 3-for-4 with a double in the opener and tossed a two-hit shutout and doubled twice in the nightcap.
“For all of us to come together and string hits together was really fun,” Kelley said. “That was big for us tonight.”
Clear Creek Amana jumped to an early 4-0 lead in game one, scoring an unearned run in the first and adding two more runs on RBI singles by Addilyn Scheetz and Brenna Williams in the second.
Solon sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run third inning and tied the game on a two-run, two-out single by Emerson Miller.
Clear Creek Amana grabbed the momentum right back, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth, the big blow a three-run line drive home run to left center field by Kyla Schulte.
“I was just making sure I wasn’t getting too anxious,” Schulte said. “Sometimes I get too anxious so I had to wait for the pitch I wanted and she threw me one and I was swinging.”
The Clippers never trailed again the rest of the evening.
Schulte, Scheetz and Williams all had two hits in the opener while Kelley and eighth-grader Turner Patrick had three hits.
Eight different Clippers had a hit and eight different players scored a run in the game-one win.
“We were definitely more picky at the plate,” Kelley said. “We saw the ball a lot better and just worked on seeing strikes and picking our pitch to hit.”
It was more of the same in the nightcap.
Clear Creek Amana broke open a scoreless game with five runs on three hits in the second inning.
Kelley doubled and Elizabeth Timmerman and Kyla Schulte had singles in the five-run inning.
“We were way better tonight about being selective than we have the past couple of games,” Scheetz said. “That was a big focus for us.”
The early runs were more than enough for Kelley who allowed just two hits and two walks in a four-inning shutout.
“My drop was my most effective pitch,” Kelley said. “I threw some drop curves that were pretty good too but I worked pretty low in the zone and my drop was effective.”
Schulte had two hits and drove in a run and Kelley drove in two runs in the game two win.
“We kept our energy up and made sure we were feeding off of each other’s energy,” Schulte said. “When we made plays everyone was cheering everyone on.”
Liv Nelson and Addie Miller had hits in the nightcap for Solon and Miller had a solo homer in the opener for the Spartans.
