DES MOINES – Colin Whitters came to the state track and field meet this week chasing a pair of individual titles while seeking to help West High to its first team trophy since 2018.
Whitters came up just shy of his first goal on Thursday finishing runner-up in the Class 4A discus at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The junior throwing standout isn’t about to let a minor misstep distract him from achieving his final two goals.
“We’ve got another one tomorrow,” Whitters said. “I’ll let this ruin my dinner tonight but I can’t let it ruin my breakfast tomorrow.”
Whitters entered Thursday’s discus competition with the top qualifying throw at 186-9 but settled for a runner-up finish, which was the second consecutive state medal for the Iowa football commit.
Davenport West senior Nolan Dempsey won the discus title with a mark of 177-2.
“Obviously not my best day but I can’t complain about second place,” Whitters said. “I’ve still got one more.”
Whitters also owns the best qualifying throw in the 4A shot put which is scheduled for tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
The shot put offers another shot at an individual title for Whitters and a second opportunity to help add to the point total for West High which concluded the opening day with 11 team points.
“Obviously there is tomorrow,” Whitters said. “I wish I could have won, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth for next year but we’ve still got one more.”
Whitters was joined in the top-eight in the discus by teammate Elite Mbulekoya.
Mbulekoya finished eighth with a toss of 155-7.
The West High 4×800 relay team of Dara Olaleye, Sam Showers, Maxwell Bruss and Moustafa Tiea finished seventh in a time of 7:51.78.
