Clear Creek Amana Sweeps Team Titles on Stellar Night at Class 3A State Qualifier

The talk for every team all season is about peaking at the right time.
That time is the state qualifying meet and ultimately the state track and field meet.
There is peaking at the right time and then there is what Clear Creek Amana did on Thursday night at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at Mapleleaf Complex in Mount Pleasant.
Clear Creek Amana swept the team titles on a dominating night for both the boys and girls teams on Thursday in Mount Pleasant.
“I feel like I’m peaking amazing right now,” Clear Creek Amana sophomore Tay Seals said. “Going into state with a 13.87 and a 10.7 under my belt, with us being seeded in the top five for shuttle. I feel like we peaked at the exact right time and we’re going into state hot.”
Seals was part of a huge night for the Clipper boys which had 15 events automatically qualifying for next week’s Class 3A state meet set for May 22-24 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Landon Prince won the discus and shot put titles and Seals finished runner-up in both the 100 and 110 hurdles as Clear Creek Amana racked up 179 team points, 59 more than runner-up Fairfield.
Prince won the discus with a state-leading toss of 194-4 and added a title in the shot put with a mark of 60-3 ¼.
Seals was runner-up in the 100 in 10.76 and second in the 110 hurdles in a time of 13.87.
The sophomore standout anchored the Clear Creek Amana shuttle hurdle relay team to a title in 58.61 and ran the anchor on the Clippers’ 4×100 team that won in 42.45.
“The 100, second place, 10.76 right after the shuttle. I mean, I do that a lot, but it’s a lot on the body, so I’m happy with that, and I let that kid enjoy it,” Seals said. “But that 110 (hurdles) finish, I mean that was just like… that couldn’t have gone any better.”
It was a full team effort from the Clippers who finished first and second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 and qualified all seven relays for the state meet.
Brock Hilsman won the 1,600 in 4:40.05 and Carson Meskimen was runner-up in 4:40.27.
Nic Schieltz won the 3,200 in 10:37.19 and teammate Kyle Vogel was runner-up in 10:43.49.
Clear Creek Amana won the shuttle hurdle and 4×100 relays and was runner-up in the sprint medley, distance medley, 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800.
The winning shuttle hurdle relay time of 58.61 is just off the season best time of 58.43 for the Clippers.
“I have faith in every single one of our guys,” Seals said. “We’re running a freshman who was not even projected to be on our team this year. And I just talked to him before the race and I said, ‘hey, I know that you’ve got this. This is your race and you don’t have to worry about anything but just running your race’.”
The Clear Creek Amana girls team had an equally impressive performance on its way to a team title.
The Clippers had 10 automatic qualifiers, including six relays, while racking up 153 points to finish eight points in front of host Mount Pleasant.
Junior Elizabeth Timmerman won the long jump with a leap of 17-4 and added a runner-up finish in the 200 in 26.34.
Nakia Tangang won the discus with a toss of 130-6 and Jaylin Herring won the 400 hurdles in 1:07.9.
Clear Creek Amana won three relays and finished runner-up in three others to secure state meet spots.
Kira Barker anchored the Clippers to a title in the distance medley relay in a time of 4:20.41.
“It was, I think, a 13-second PR for the season,” Barker said. “I don’t know where that came from, but it was exciting. I’m really excited, it’s my first year with two events (at state).”
The foursome of Kennedy Stratton, Maycin Ernst, Payton Curtin and Barker edged runner-up Fort Madison by less than half a second for the distance medley title.
“It was like crazy to me, I looked at Payton and I told her to just go out there and run fast and I was thinking we’re going to go out and finish strong,” Ernst said. “Relays are a team thing and I always want to run for my team so I was hopeful that we were going to get it, and we ended up doing it, so it was good.”
Clear Creek Amana added titles in the 4×200 relay in 1:43.4 and the 4×400 relay in 4:06.08.
The Clippers finished runner-up in the shuttle hurdle, 4×100 and 4×800 relays.
