The Your Prep Sports Alumni Report is a weekly segment that recognizes the accomplishments of graduates from YPS area schools that are continuing their careers as student athletes at the collegiate level. Alumni News is a way for readers to keep tabs on former area standouts.
Gable Mitchell
Former City High standout and current University of Iowa junior Gable Mitchell was named to the Brooks Wallace Award midseason watch list on Friday by the College Baseball Foundation.
Mitchell was one of 100 shortstops across the country named to the the Brooks Wallace Award watch list that honors the nation’s top shortstop.
The City High graduate has started all 35 games for the Hawkeyes this season and leads the team with a .364 batting average and 39 runs scored.
Mitchell has 30 runs scored, 13 doubles and three home runs and owns a .955 fielding percentage with a team-high 87 assists.
Hilary Wilson
Solon graduate and current Des Moines Area Community College sophomore infielder Hilary Wilson had a big weekend at the plate as the Bears posted a pair of doubleheader sweeps.
Wilson went 7-for-13 in four games on Friday and Saturday including a 4-of-6 performance at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Kirkwood Community College on Saturday.
On the season Wilson is batting .356 with 12 doubles, five home runs, 35 runs scored and 50 RBI while helping DMACC to a 44-5 record and a 20-2 conference mark.
Ethan O’Donnell
Liberty High graduate and current Coe College senior Ethan O’Donnell tossed a complete game two-hitter on Saturday in a 12-1 win over Wartburg College in Waverly.
O’Donnell struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in the complete game victory.
The senior right-hander retired the final 12 batters he faced and allowed just one hit and no runs over the final six innings.
On the season O’Donnell is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings pitched and has struck out 36 while allowing 35 hits.
The strong season from O’Donnell has helped Coe to a 25-7 record including a 15-3 mark in American Rivers Conference play.
