Previewing the State Championship Matches Featuring Your Prep Sports Athletes

Your Prep Sports It’s championship Saturday at the state wrestling meet.
The final session of the four-day state wrestling tournament gets underway at Wells Fargo Arena at 5:15 p.m. tonight where state champions will be crowned in all weight classes across all three classes.
Before the final matches of the season get underway here is a look at the three state championship matches featuring Your Prep Sports area wrestlers.
Alexander Pierce (West High) vs. Nico DeSalvo (Southeast Polk)
Wrestling fans won’t have to wait long for one of the marquee matchups of the night as former state champions Pierce and DeSalvo meet in a one versus two matchup in the 113-pound finals.
Second-ranked Pierce (47-2) is a three-time state finalist seeking a second state title after winning the 106-pound title two seasons ago.
Last seasons’113-pound runner-up Pierce owns a 124-6 career record and brings a 32-match winning streak into the finals.
The only two losses for Pierce this season came to the two 3A state finalists at 120 pounds.
Top-ranked DeSalvo is seeking a second straight state title after going 38-1 on his way to the 106-pound championship lasts season as a freshman.
DeSalvo is 75-1 in his career, is unbeaten against in-state competition and is riding a 53-match winning streak that dates back to last season.
DeSalvo hasn’t had a state tournament match go the distance reaching the finals with a first-period pin and two tech falls including a 15-0 semifinal win over sixth-ranked Benjamin Walsh of Ankeny.
Justin Avila (West High) vs. Jabari Hinson (Ames)
While Pierce and DeSalvo will be seeking to add a second title in the 113-pound showdown the 150-pound title match will feature a pair of wrestlers seeking their first career title.
Avila and Hinson are both three-time medalists but first-time finalists seeking to end their careers on the top of the podium.
Second-ranked Avila was fourth at 170 pounds as a freshman and fifth at 150 pounds a year ago.
Avila (48-3) has been at his best this season and has impressed while reaching the title match.
Avila is unbeaten against in-state competition this season a brings a 37-match winning streak into Saturday’s night’s 150-pound title match.
Avila reached the finals with a 4-0 win over sixth-ranked Elijah Blewitt of Indianola and a second-period pin of ninth-ranked Mason Lucas of Carlisle.
Top-ranked Hinson (48-0) finished runner-up at 126-pounds two seasons ago at 126 pounds and was fourth at 138 pounds last season.
Hinson advanced to the finals with a 2-1 win over fifth-ranked Parker Casey of Johnston in the semifinals.
Lucas Feuerbach (Solon) vs. Mason Koehler (Glenwood)
The 215-pound final matches a pair of rising stars seeking their first trip to the top of the podium.
Solon sophomore Lucas Feuerbach (46-3) has burst onto the scene this week in Des Moines after narrowly missing a state medal last season as a freshman.
Second-ranked Feuerbach has posted back-to-back state-tournament wins over ranked opponents reaching the finals with an impressive 10-4 semifinal win over second-ranked Henry Christensen of North Polk.
Top-ranked Mason Koehler (41-4) is already a two-time medalist seeking to add a state title to his resume.
Koehler was eighth at 220 pounds as a freshman and finished fifth at 215 pounds last season.
The lone loss to an in-state opponent for Koehler this season came to 3A two-time state champion Dreshaun Ross of Fort Dodge in the finals of the Ed Winger Invitational in Urbandale on January 25.
Koehler advanced to the finals with a third-period pin of fourth-ranked Chris Wrage of Central DeWitt in the semifinals.
