Familiar Foursome Earns Spots at State Meet For Solon

Solon had four wrestlers secure spots at the state wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Class 2A, District 12 meet in Williamsburg on Saturday.
It will be a familiar foursome that represents Solon next week in Des Moines.
The same four qualifiers the Spartans had last season, Jordan Schmidt, Charlie Karam, Jackson Feuerbach and Lucas Feuerbach all qualified for the state tournament with top-two district finishes on Saturday at Williamsburg High School.
Schmidt and Lucas Feuerbach each won district titles on Saturday while Jackson Feuerbach and Karam advanced to the 2A state meet scheduled for February 19-22 a Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with runner-up district finishes.
“I think those four that are going to state came out and wrestled like they have all year long,” Solon coach Aaron Hadenfeldt said. “They stayed aggressive. We had one in a wrestle back and he wrestled it like he did every other match, nothing too high and nothing too low he just did what he’s done all year.”
Schmidt became a four-time state qualifier by winning the 144-pound title on Saturday.
Tenth-ranked Schmidt (26-13) rolled through the 144-pound bracket with two first-period pins and a 20-5 tech. fall.
“I wanted to get to my offense and score points,” Schmidt said. “I’ve kind of gotten away from that so I want to get to my offense and stay active.”
Schmidt pinned Williamsburg sophomore Sawyer Kirby (30-16) in the semifinals and needed just 1:45 to pin Mid-Prairie senior Mason Howe (18-6) in the 144-pound championship match.
“I said to Jordan after that match, I had him look me in the eye and I said ‘its good to have you back because we haven’t seen that Jordan for a little while’,” Hadenfeldt said. “Jordan Schmidt is still capable of being on the top of the podium in Des Moines. If he comes out and wrestles like he is capable of there is no reason why he can’t do that so this is a good weekend to get him back on track.”
Lucas Feuerbach (43-3) won the 215-pound title to return to the state tournament for a second consecutive season.
The sophomore standout pinned Greyson Hartman (29-12) of Washington in 38 seconds in the semifinals and won a 7-4 decision over Williamsburg junior Carson Grier (32-7) in the championship.
Third-ranked Feuerbach scored a pair of takedowns in the opening period while building a 6-1 lead in his win over Grier.
“We need to get it through Lucas’ head that he can wrestle the entire match like he does the first period and he wouldn’t get touched by anyone in the state,” Hadenfeldt said. “A win is a win at this point, we will go back and we will learn from it and I have to remind myself at sometimes that he’s only a sophomore and he has a lot of learning to do but the sky is the limit for that kid.”
Karam (37-17) secured a state tournament trip with a runner-up finish at 138 pounds collecting career victory number 100 on Saturday.
“He didn’t say anything about it but I know it was in the back of his mind so it’s good to get that done with and over with,” Hadenfeldt said of the 100th win. He was satisfied with being in Des Moines last year and I’m hoping we go and try to bring something home from the state tournament this year.”
Karam fell to second-ranked Landen Davis (42-1) of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the Jackson Feuerbach (37-15) returned to state with a runner-up finish at 175 pounds.
Feuerbach was pinned by fourth-ranked Kyler Crow (38-0) of Mediapolis in the championship match but bounced back with a first-period pin of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont junior AJ Christner in the 175-pound wrestle back to lock up a trip to state.
“Jackson is never too high and never too low,” Hadenfeldt said. “He was probably the guy on the team I’m least worried about as far as between the ears, he’s pretty calm and collected and he went out and did what he did all year long and I’m happy for him.”
