One of the top track and field athletes in the state has made a decision on his collegiate future.
West High senior state champion Moustafa Tiea announced his commitment to South Carolina on Thursday with a post on social media.
“Proud to announce my commitment to University of South Carolina,” Tiea wrote on X. “I’m so thankful for my family, friends and (coaches) for supporting and guiding me all this way.”
A six-time state medalist in track and field Tiea is coming off a breakthrough junior season in which he earned his first career state title.
Tiea won the Class 4A 800 meter title last season in at time of 1:54.24 to cap a state meet performance that featured three top-five finishes.
Already a three-time state medalist in the 800 Tiea finished eighth in the event as a freshman and was third as a sophomore before claiming the 800 title last spring.
Last season Tiea added a fourth-place finish in the 400 at the state meet in a time of 49.13 and anchored the West High distance medley relay team to a fifth-place finish.
Tiea anchored the West High distance medley relay team to a state title as a sophomore in 2023.
Also a four-time state qualifier in cross country Tiea earned his first career state medal earlier this month finishing ninth at the 4A state meet in a time of 15:38.3.
