Humboldt Shuts Down Solon in Class 3A Quarterfinal
Your Prep Sports
HUMBOLDT – Solon’s run for the dome came to an end in the Class 3A Quarterfinal Friday night in Humboldt.
The turnover bug bit the Spartans in this one, as the Humboldt defense forced six Spartan turnovers and held the Spartans to a season-low three points. The Wildcats scored 35 unanswered points in the second and third quarters for a convincing 35-3 win.
The Spartan defense, led by Kyler Jensen, got the night started on a good note.
On the Wildcats first possession, Jensen had three consecutive tackles, including a sack and tackle-for-loss, forcing a three-and-out.
The Spartans took over on their own 31 yard line and drove 50 yards to the Humboldt 19 before the drive stalled.
Ryan Locke put the Spartans up 3-0 with a 36 yard field goal.
Unfortunately, that would be the only score for the Spartans on the night.
The Wildcats scored on their first two possessions of the second quarter on drives of 72 and 55 yards, both capped off by touchdown passes from quarterback Coen Matson.
After an interception on the ensuing Spartan drive, Matson ran in from 1 yard out to put the Wildcats up 21-3 at halftime.
The first two Spartan possessions of the second half would also end with interceptions, both of which led to Wildcat touchdowns.
On the night, the Wildcats would intercept five Spartan passes and force one Spartan fumble.
The Spartans nearly got into the end zone in the fourth quarter as Ty Bell hit Eli Kampman with a 37 yard pass.
However, as Kampman was headed to the end zone, the Wildcat defender was able to knock the ball loose into the end zone for the touchback.
That was the closest the Spartans would come to the end zone on an uncharacteristically rough night for the Spartan offense.
Offensively, the Spartans were led by senior Eddie Johnson with 79 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving.
On defense, Kyler Jensen and Oliver Owens were in on 15 tackles each.
The Spartans end their season 8-3. Humboldt advances to play Mount Vernon in the 3A semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on November 16 at 7 p.m.
