Baseball Roundup: Waterbury Fans 13 in Three-hit Shutout as Liberty High Downs Waterloo East in Substate Opener

Mason Waterbury tossed a three-hit shutout as Class 4A ninth-ranked Liberty High downed Waterloo East 2-0 in a Substate 8 quarterfinal on Friday in North Liberty.
Waterbury struck out 13 and didn’t walk a batter in the three-hit shutout as Liberty High improved to 25-13 on the season.
Waterloo East closed the season 13-19.
Ryan Schmierer and Evan Schmierer each scored first-inning runs and Waterbury did the rest as the top-seeded Lightning advanced to the Substate 8 title game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Liberty High will face the winner of Monday’s substate semifinal between seventh-ranked Davenport North (29-12) and Pleasant Valley (18-17) in the substate title game.
Waterbury faced 23 batters and needed just 85 pitches in the complete-game win improving his season record to 10-0.
Cooper Hughes, Brayden Bell and Liam Bender all had hits for Liberty High and Jayden Khamphilanouvong drove in a run for the Lightning.
