OXFORD – Kyla Schulte used her bat to get Clear Creek Amana off to a strong start on Friday morning.
The two-way standout used both her arm and bat to help the Clippers finish off an unbeaten day.
After driving in three runs in a 3-0 win over Regina in the opening game of Clear Creek Amana’s home tournament on Friday in Oxford Schulte tossed a one-hit shutout, homered and drove in five in a 10-0 five-inning win over Fairfield.
“The first game gave me a boost 100 percent,” Schulte said. “That gave me the momentum to do well.”
Behind the big day for Schulte Class 4A No. 10 Clear Creek Amana posted an emphatic opening day at its home tournament outscoring opponents 13-0 while improving to 19-7 on the season and pushing its winning streak to four.
Clear Creek Amana hammered 10 hits in the win over Fairfield, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via run rule.
“We’ve just been working really well together,” Shulte said. “We’ve been a good team, we’ve been playing well together and that’s helped how we’ve done.”
Elizabeth Timmerman pitched a complete game shutout in the win over Regina and Schulte provided the offense going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
“The first game definitely helped get us going,” Clear Creek Amana senior shortstop Reese Stockman said. “After that first game we knew we could have fun and that helped us in the second game.”
Schulte got the Clippers going early against Fairfield with a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the first.
The sophomore added an RBI ground out in a two-run Clipper third inning and belted a two-run home run to center field as part of the six-run fifth.
Schulte finished the day 4-for-6 with eight RBI.
“I’m just making sure I’m getting a good pitch I can hit,” Schulte said. “I was very selective with what pitched I wanted that to be.”
Schulte was as good in the circle as she was in the batters box.
The right-hander walked three and struck out four in the win over Fairfield allowing just a two-out single in the third.
“She pitched a great game and that’s something we’ve been working on is just building confidence and being confident on the mound,” Clear Creek Amana coach Jodie Scheetz said. “Today she looked really good on the mound and was confident.”
Schulte escaped her only jam of the game in the third when left fielder Aeslyn Massey threw out Fairfield’s Emmelia Miller at the plate attempting to score on a base hit to left.
Schulte retired six of the seven batters she faced allowing just a one-out walk in the fifth.
“Our defense made lots of plays,” Schulte said. “My curve was working well and I was hitting my spots with my fastball.”
Clear Creek Amana led 4-0 but broke the game open and eventually ended the game in the fifth.
Massey started the inning with a single, Brenna Williams doubled to left and Stockman followed with an RBI single.
“There is always an adjustment to the pitcher as the game goes on and we talked to each other,” Stockman said. “When we started getting hits they just strung together.”
Schulte had the big blow with a two-run, line drive home run to center field.
“She is really coming along and she’s really hitting the ball well right now,” Sheetz said. “Every time she hits the ball it’s pretty hard.”
Ellah Dodd had a single, Carley Nash an RBI double and McKenna Kelley an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Clear Creek Amana will host Class 4A No. 7 Carlisle and Keokuk on Saturday.
