DES MOINES – Clear Creek Amana got off to a solid start at the state track and field meet on Thursday and followed with strong day two on Friday.
On Saturday the Clippers put the finishing touches on what turned into a historic weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Sophomore standout Aren Schlemme capped a breakout meet with two more top-four finishes, Isaac Sorensen set a school-record in the 800 and the Clippers posted a top-four finish in the 4×100 while placing sixth in the 3A team race to match the best finish in program history.
“It’s just fun being here running with your boys, running with your best friends,” Sorensen said. “It’s fun to run as an individual but its way more fun to run with your boys.”
With three top-five efforts on Saturday the Clippers finished tied for sixth with Center Point-Urbana in the 3A team race with 37 points.
It was the fourth top-10 finish for Clear Creek Amana in the last 10 seasons.
Western Dubuque won the 3A team title with 72 points followed by ADM with 71 and Pella with 48.
Solon was fifth with 38 points and Williamsburg was ninth with 26 giving the WAMAC Conference four of the top nine teams in 3A.
WAMAC member South Tama finished tied for 11th with 24 points.
“It’s fun because the guys in the WAMAC we are all friends,” Sorensen said. “We are out there to have fun and to have a good time and compete.”
Sorensen started the strong Saturday finish with a fifth-place finish in the 800 in a new school-record time of 1:56.16.
“I just wanted to medal,” Sorensen said. “I knew team wise the shuttle kind of fell so I knew I had to get points for the team.”
Schlemme followed with his second top-three individual performance of the weekend when he finished third in the 110 hurdles.
The sophomore won the long jump title on Friday and ran on the Clipper 4×100 relay team that finished fourth on Saturday.
“I did not think I was going to get third,” Schlemme said. “I didn’t think I had a really amazing first race, the time wasn’t bad but I thought everyone was going to pull ahead.”
Western Dubuque senior Ashton Hogrefe won the 110 hurdle title in 14.44 while Central DeWitt senior Tristan Rheingans was runner-up in 14.61.
Schlemme was third in 14.77.
“I’m getting there,” Schlemme said. “Hopefully next year I’ll be a lot faster because I’d like to be running their times. As long as I make the same jump as I did from last year to this year I’ll be good.”
The Clipper 4×100 foursome of Brayden Frank, Tay Seals, Owen Rosenberg and Schlemme closed the weekend with a fourth-place finish in a season-best time of 42.61.
Harlan won the 4×100 in a time of 41.6 followed by ADM in 41.9.
