DES MOINES – Whether it be a strong individual run or a new best time every member of the West High shuttle hurdle relay team explained a slightly different goal for Saturday’s title final.
The one goal the Trojans were in complete agreement was they wanted to end their season with a bang.
West High did just that on Saturday afternoon on the state’s biggest stage.
The Trojan foursome of Erinn Varga, Jaylin Herring, Eriniah Carter and Sophia Olivo finished fifth at the Class 4A state meet on Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“All we were worried about in prelims is making finals and running clean,” Carter said. “I just wanted to end with a good bang and we were able to do that today.”
Carter and Olivo were part of the West High shuttle hurdle team that placed fourth at the state meet last season in a time of 1:04.91.
On Saturday Olivo and Carter helped West High secure a shuttle hurdle medal for the second consecutive season as the Trojans finished fifth in 1:04.61.
West Des Moines Dowling won the shuttle hurdle relay title for the third straight season in a time of 1:01.57.
West High was just behind West Des Moines Valley which finished fourth in 1:04.58.
“I just wanted to really focus on the race and do the best I can do personally,” Olivo said. “I wanted to do that and maybe try to catch somebody.”
Varga and Herring were the new team members and fit in perfectly as the Trojans improved their time from last year’s state final performance by .3 on Saturday.
“I think we are a really tight-knit group,” Herring said. “We do a good job of staying positive.”
A four-time state qualifier in the 400 hurdles, Varga finished seventh in that event on Friday.
This was her first season on the shuttle hurdle relay team and she is glad she decided to give the relay a try.
“It was fun to learn something new,” Varga said. “I just wanted to help these girls out, since they’ve done such a great job this season and I’m very proud of them.”
West High sophomore Hannah Longmire capped a four-gold medal weekend with a trio of titles on Saturday.
Longmire won titles in the 100 (15.83), 200 (32.67) and 400 (1:17.01) ambulatory events on Saturday after winning her first title in the 200 on Friday.
