DES MOINES – There is a simple trend that has applied to Solon standout thrower Ben Kampman in his events this season.
When Kampman throws well in the discus he usually has a strong day in the shot put.
Having a day between breaks didn’t stop that streak for Kampman on Friday at the Class 3A state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Kampman followed up a state title in the discus on Thursday with a third-place finish in the shot put on Friday helping Solon continue to hang around in the 3A team race.
“I came in today with a lot more confidence,” Kampman said. “After I throw long disc I usually throw long shot and that continued.”
Kampman became the first discus champion in Solon history on Thursday winning his first career state title.
On Friday he set a career best with a toss of 55-6 ¾ to post his second top-three finish in as many days.
“I just wanted to throw over 55 and I hit that so I am really happy,” Kampman said. “I’m happy with how I threw.”
A Duke recruit, Kampman specializes in the discus but showed his overall throwing prowess on Friday.
His first throw was 53-8 ½ which was good enough to reach finals where he unleashed his first career throw over 55 feet.
Pella senior Hanson King won the discus with a toss of 59-5 ½ while Vinton-Shellsburg senior Tory Wash was second at 57-10.
“I work shot every day in practice,” Kampman said. “I have a little more attention on discus but doing both it transfers over and that helps.”
The strong two-day showing from Kampman has been part of a strong start to the meet for Solon which sits third in the 3A team standings with 27 points entering the final day.
Pella leads the 3A team standings with 35 points followed by Western Dubuque with 28.
Solon also got an eighth-place finish from junior Caleb Bock in the long jump on Friday.
Bock finished eighth with a jump of 21-2.
