DES MOINES – It had been a little while since Landon Prince had a personal record in the discus.
Exactly how long since the Clear Creek Amana set a new personal best?
It was long enough that when Prince launched a career-best on his first attempt at the Class 3A state track and field meet on Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines he was a little surprised.
Or a lot surprised.
“At the beginning my reaction was mostly shock because it had been so long,” Prince said. “It felt good though.”
Prince used the combination of good weather and elite competition to come up with the best performance of his career on Thursday which ended with a fourth-place finish, a school record and a new personal best of 167-11.
“I just wanted to perform because I hadn’t had a pr in a long time,” Prince said. “I thought it was a good opportunity to go out and throw far.”
Prince wasted little time in making the most of his opportunity.
He had three throws on Thursday better than his previous career-best of 160-9.
His first throw of 167-11 earned him his first career state meet medal an put him in the top four with two other conference competitors.
Solon senior Ben Kampman won with a toss of 186-3 and Williamsburg senior Derek Weisskopf was runner-up with a mark of 179-8.
Hanson King of Pella was third with a throw of 175-8.
“Competing against the top guys in the state definitely pushed me to be better,” Prince said. “That’s a big piece of it.”
The fourth-place finish from Prince was part of a solid opening day for the Clippers.
Clear Creek Amana also got a sixth-place finish from its 4×800 relay team while racking up eight team points.
Brock Hilsman, Noah Yost, Jackson VanHorn and Isaac Sorensen finished sixth in 4×800 in a time of 8:07.34.
