SOLON – As the Solon boys’ track and field team began its celebration, Coach Mark Sovers gathered the team for a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday to You.”
Not only did senior Ben Kampman have eighteen candles to extinguish after Thursday’s Class 3A state-qualifying meet, he had a couple of other reasons to rejoice.
For himself, a win in the discus that gives Kampman the opportunity to better his third-place finish at last year’s state meet.
For the Spartans overall, a resounding win in the team race.
“My coach found a great queue for me,” Kampman said at Spartan Stadium. “Finding my left arm at 270 degrees and it worked out. I felt like I had a bit more in me, but I got the win and that was enough.”
Kampman’s throw of 177-4 was more than six feet better than Iowa football signee and event runner-up Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg.
Kampman will be one of the favorites when the state meet begins May 16 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“That’s the main goal right now,” Kampman said. “Track is a sport where you compete against yourself. It would be great to get a state championship.”
Solon junior Caleb Bock gave the Spartans a second win in field events by edging Maquoketa’s Ty Hinz in the long jump to earn his second state berth in a row in the event.
“That is one of the things we talked about all year long, is just having a complementary lineup from the top to the bottom,” Sovers said. “And the field events always get us started. They do such a super job of investing in each other and the event that they do.”
Brick Kabela (1,600) and Michael Yeomans (800) also picked up individual wins for the Spartans.
Kabela also earned a state berth with a runner-up finish in the 3,000, the second year in a row he will compete in both the 1,600 and the 3,000 at the state meet.
“Getting my body right this next week is going to be huge,” Kabela said. “Recovering from tonight and then just feeling it right. Sticking to what I have done all season. I have seen improvements at almost every meet, so just staying focused and trusting myself when the time comes.”
The Solon girls won a pair of relays and received individual wins from Hailey Miller (long jump) and Aly Stahle (100 hurdles) on their way to a comfortable victory in the team race, despite senior standout Gracie Federspiel being limited to just one event (800) due to a foot injury.
“A lot of things went our way, which is really good,” Solon girls coach Jessica Hotek said. “Overall, we had a really, really outstanding night. Across the board.”
